‘I couldn’t keep making excuses’

As my sons Caelan, then 12, and Myles, three, raced ahead of me on the way to the park, I struggled to keep up. ‘Catch us, Mummy,’ they chanted. Panting and wheezing, I grimaced through the pain coursing through my joints and I had to stop to rest on somebody’s garden wall. ‘Boys, slow down!’ I called, desperately trying to catch my breath. It was early 2020 and at 15st 9lb, I was on the big side for my 5ft 4in height. Deep down, I knew that my joints were struggling to cope and I felt so ashamed for letting myself get so big.
