Sat up in the hospital bed, with my dad, Paul, then 43, in the bed next to mine, I pulled a face as the nurse served up our lunch. ‘Steak and kidney pie,’ I frowned in disgust, pushing my plate away. ‘Waste not, want not,’ chuckled Dad, getting out of bed and walking over in his hospital gown, to finish off the remainders of my lunch as well as his own.
