My bunion is painful! Q I have an unsightly bunion on my right foot. Recently it has become painful. What can I do to stop it getting worse? Esme, Brighton A Bunions are very common. There is debate about what causes them but there does seem to be a genetic link and high, pointy shoes don’t help. Go barefoot when you can or wear loose-fitting shoes to take the pressure off the joint. Wear gel pads to cushion the area or a device that holds the big toe straighter (both available in pharmacies). There’s no evidence they will prevent the bunion worsening but can help with the pain.
