When I arrive at Bernie Nolan’s beautiful home in the Surrey countryside, I am greeted by a typical family scene. Bernie’s husband of 16 years, Steve, a drummer, is busy making tea, feeding the family schnauzer, Dexter, and taking pizza out of the oven. Their daughter Erin, 13, is engrossed in her laptop. ‘We’re carrying on as usual, living as normal a life as possible,’ Bernie says as she hands me a cup of tea.
But what this tightly knit family has been through this year has been anything but normal. In February, Bernie received the news that her breast cancer, first diagnosed in 2010, had disappeared. However, in June, she was told that the disease had returned. And this time it had attacked her lungs, liver, bones and brain.…
