Hearing the whirl of a helicopter overhead, Ori and Lindsey Zavros let out a huge sigh of relief.
The couple and their children, Zoe, three, and Zane, two, spent five terrifying nights stranded in the Simpson Desert earlier this month after heavy rainfall, flash flooding and gale force winds caused their campervan to become bogged.
“When the storm hit it flooded all the roads and when we got into the mudflats, they were basically impassable,” Ori, 34, exclusively tells Woman’s Day, from the safety of home in Wanneroo, WA.
The family, who spent the last year completing a trip around Australia, were heading home to Perth to spend Christmas with their families when disaster struck 150km north-east of Oodnadatta.
