Although the Bullen family share their 50-acre property with horses, donkeys and chickens, there’s one loyal pooch called Phoenix who has stolen all of their hearts.
“He’s basically my shadow,” says mum-of-two Zelie Bullen, who first met the Kelpie pup while training him for his starring role in Red Dog: True Blue, which landed in cinemas last week.
Yet when her work was done, Zelie, her husband Craig, 53, and their son Colt, 10, couldn’t bear to say goodbye to Phoenix. So he became part of the household, and has since developed a bond with the Bullens’ newest addition, one-year-old baby Blaze.
“He’s a loyal, honest, gentle, loving dog,” says Zelie. “But he is also this tough, independent, robust character, like Red Dog.”
