The problem with living in the country is the proximity to animals. What I mean by this is that my daughter wants to bring all of them home – donkeys, sheep, cows, horses, llamas, alpacas, dogs … you name it.
But we only have a dog and some ducks, and I don’t think you can count the ducks as pets. I mean, they’re basically birds and we have a lot of them – they’re noisy, beautifully coloured and extremely self-contained. We have hawks, magpies, parakeets, kingfishers, heron and kereru. It feels like an aviary outside.
Their birdsong is awesome and even the swallows nesting under our spouting are cute. We have plover eggs in our paddocks, so they’re breeding, and as long as the pukeko stay away, we should be…
