When former music TV presenter and seasoned party girl Helena McAlpine passed away at just 37 from breast cancer in November 2015, her daughter Shannon made a promise. “I’m gonna do big things for her,” vowed the then-15-year-old. Peanut Butter & Jelly Banana Bread SERVES 8 PREPARATION 10 MINUTES COOKING 1 HOUR Preheat oven to moderate, 180°C. Lightly grease and line a 10 x 20cm loaf pan. Sift 2 cups self-raising flour and 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon together into a large bowl. Stir in ½ cup brown sugar. Make a well. In a small bowl, combine ½ cup crunchy peanut butter and 1 tablespoon caster sugar, then set aside. The Lynch brigade likes a family holiday, so this past Easter we headed up to Russell in the balmy Bay of Islands. 1 The town The main drag runs along the pretty foreshore, making it one of New Zealand’s loveliest holiday towns. There’s not a heck of a lot of shopping to be done, but there are pretty much all the usual suspects, plus a couple of grocery stores. Mum was happy because she found the church for Easter Sunday mass and I was happy because I found Newport, the chocolate shop. Director Gurinder Chadha (Bend it Like Beckham fame) took 11 years to create this moving film about the 1947 partition of India. The movie follows the last Viceroy of India, Louis Mountbatten, who was also Prince Charles’ grand-uncle.
