The idea that you should walk 10,000 steps per day started as a marketing slogan in Japan in the 1960s, when the pedometer was introduced and the idea that activity was beneficial to health was being established. The value of walking, or steps, has been shown in studies since then, but whether it’s 8,000 or 12,000 seems to matter less than consistently keeping active. In fact, the studies seem to only compare those doing fewer than 5,000 steps per day, which would be considered a sedentary lifestyle, with those who do 10,000 steps, so it may well be that 6-8,000 steps has the same benefits.
