In diabetes, blood sugar levels are higher than they should be, and many people assume this is caused by eating too much sugar. However, the main problem in diabetes is with the hormone insulin, which controls blood sugar levels. In type 1 diabetes, the pancreas does not produce insulin; in type 2 diabetes, the cells in the body, especially fat cells, are unable to use insulin properly, a condition called insulin resistance.
