Many, if not most, farmers and ranchers know that climate change is altering our planet – weather patterns are changing and this is affecting earth’s biomes. An increase in extreme weather events make farming and ranching – already fairly unpredictable ventures – a lot more unpredictable. In addition, increasing temperatures and drought will challenge even the most prepared of ranchers. KwaZulu-Natal is currently experiencing drought conditions and there is concern for the wildlife in the iSimangaliso Wetland Park and the Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Game Reserve, where water levels are critically low.
According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), climate change will bring increasing risks of heat stress, storms and extreme precipitation, inland and coastal flooding, landslides, air pollution, drought, water scarcity, sea-level rise and storm surges.
