I have long held the view that the slow progress of rural development, land reform and transformation (or deracialisation, a term I prefer) in agriculture is the biggest stumbling block to the development of a growing agricultural economy and a thriving South Africa for the benefit of all.
This is definitely not because I believe that every person in the country (black, white, coloured, Asian) wants a farm or piece of rural land. It is because, as we have seen all over the world, and especially north of the Limpopo, unscrupulous, populist politicians will use the land question, making undeliverable promises, to whip up support for themselves.
