Q My great grandmother, Mary Ann Skinner, married my great grandfather, Alexander Donet, on 3 June 1873, in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. The birth certificate I have for Mary Ann says she was born on 28 May 1855 to William Letherbee Skinner, victualler, and Eliza Skinner formerly Leathlean, at the Golden Lion, Devonport. Mary Ann’s son, my grandfather, was born in Melbourne, Australia, and his Australian birth certificate says that his mother was born in Devon, England.
However, my second cousin has a different birth certificate for Mary Ann, with details: 6 May 1854, Mary Ann Skinner, born Liverpool, England, father John Skinner. My great grandmother’s death certificate has Liverpool as her birthplace, which I think is why they believe theirs is correct.
