A classified advert published in the 15 August 1912 issue of weekly Australian news magazine The Bulletin reads, “Mrs C Skingley of No 1 Victoria Road, Oxney Green, Writtle near Chelmsford, England, wants to hear from her brother Ivy Earnden, who was at Uanda Station, Australia, some years ago.”
It’s a crucial bit of the puzzle Rob Earnden patiently pieced together as he searched for the truth about his Earnden family. There’s no way of knowing if Mrs Skingley’s advert helped her trace her brother, but 120 years later, it allowed Rob, one of their relatives, to reunite the siblings – in family lore at least.
