Q My great grandfather, James Duffus, was born in about 1837. He was a carpenter, and family lore has it that his father was provost of the burgh of Cullen, Banffshire.
The 1851 census shows James as a scholar in Deskford Street, Cullen, the nephew of John Duffus, house carpenter, and Christina his wife. In 1841, James, aged four, is at Deskford Street with the same couple.
I cannot find a birth record for him, but an illegitimate child named James was born to Elizabeth Davidson in Cullen, on 14 July 1836, and baptised on 5 March 1837, but I cannot connect her to the Duffus family. However, in Upper Castle Street, Cullen, there was a William Duffus, house carpenter, in both the 1841 and 1851 censuses. This William Duffus…
