Trentham, a suburb of Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, has a war memorial, like most towns and villages in Britain. In 2014, as the nation marked the centenary of the start of the First World War, members of the local branch of the National Women’s Register (nwr.org.uk) decided to take a closer look at it. Almost a decade later, they’re still researching local history as the Trentham Heritage Project (trenthamheritage.org.uk).
“There are just 17 names on the war memorial, so it’s not like some where there’s maybe 100,” says Marilyn Vigurs, one of the project’s coordinators. “But there is a dedication on the back of it saying, ‘This memorial cross is a gift from the women of Trentham.’ That seemed a bit of an odd thing to have on a war memorial, so…
