As is so often demonstrated by my writing group, give a genealogist a family mystery and we cannot resist going off on a tangent to try to solve it.
Auction houses can be a good place to discover mysteries. Many years ago, I could not resist purchasing an unusual sampler I discovered at an auction in Grantham. Worked by Mary Lees (born 26 July 1793) in 1811, the piece lists the dates of birth of her parents, George and Mary (née Halliwell), and their seven children, as well as the death of Mary’s brother Joseph.
The Lees family were from Oldham, Lancashire. The parents married, and Mary and the children were baptised at St Mary’s parish church in the town, but George was probably from Ashton-under-Lyne. Less than five miles…
