Before lockdown I often visited churches and cathedrals, mostly to study the history, architecture and decoration of the building. But my attention would invariably be diverted by tombs and monuments, tablets and grave slabs, with their inscriptions and effigies.
There’s something compelling and also very moving about the urns and cherubs, skulls and flowers that decorate monuments from 200 or 300 years ago. I can’t resist reading the descriptions and the factual details of these long-deceased worthies. Have you noticed that the men were, without exception, upright pillars, strong, courageous, devoted to their family, beloved by all who knew them? They were servants of the community, servants of the Crown, servants of their country. And that the women were without fail gentle, devoted wives and mothers?
