Can you solve my Jones conundrum?
Q I’m having trouble tracing my Jones ancestors on the 1851 census.
I know that George Jones, my great grandfather, was baptised on 23 November 1834 in the parish of St Mark’s, Kennington, Surrey. His parents were listed as Frederick and Susan Jones, and the address was Church Street. Frederick’s occupation was given as “mechanic”.
Later, on George’s two marriage certificates, the occupation differs. In 1857 Frederick is an “accountant”, while in 1875 he is a “hops merchant (deceased)”.
The only matching entry on the 1841 census I can find shows a Susan Jones aged 29, living in St Mary, Newington, Lambeth, along with a six-year-old boy, George, and a 26-year-old woman named Mary Jones.
