TROVE Sheila did not use Trove (trove.nla.gov.au)in her research, but it’s a must-visit website for most people looking to discover more about their Australian ancestors. Hosted by the National Library of Australia, it includes archive records, books, images, historic newspapers and maps. PASSENGER LISTS Although not all lists for every ship still survive, those that do provide a fascinating insight for anyone with ancestors who emigrated on a long-haul voyage – and many are now available for researchers online on Findmypast, Ancestry and elsewhere. Content does vary, but you can expect at least the name of the ship, the names of passengers, their ages, ports of arrival and departure, dates, country of origin and occupation. Although it can be tricky to find links to a noble family, sometimes a ‘gateway ancestor’ will emerge, leading researchers to pedigree charts that instantly help them trace back further and confirm their lineage. There was not universal acceptance of compulsory vaccination. Opposition ranged from its administration through the Poor Law authorities, religious beliefs, libertarian views against compulsion and medical/scientific evidence against its efficacy. Anti-vaccination groups were set up widely following the 1853 Vaccination Act. In Keighley, such was the opposition that in 1875 seven anti-vaccinators were elected onto the Boards of Guardians and then refused to enforce the Vaccination Act. They were arrested, tried and imprisoned. Records of the Keighley Anti-Compulsory Vaccination League are held at Keighley Local Studies Library (catalogue.wyjs.org.uk). Leicester was another hotbed of anti-vaccination activity. In March 1885, a rally attracted 80,000-100,000 protestors, many of them from anti-vaccination leagues across the country. They carried banners, a child’s coffin and an effigy of Jenner that the crowd hung on a gibbet!…

Born on 23 November 1875, Katharine was the youngest of four girls born to poet, literary critic and historian John Addington Symonds and Janet Catherine North, the sister of botanical painter Marianne North. She was brought up in London, Switzerland and Italy, and educated at home by her mother and various governesses. In 1900, she married English portrait painter Charles Wellington Furse, with whom she had two sons, but he died from tuberculosis after just four years of marriage. She joined the Red Cross Voluntary Aid Detachment in 1909, and headed up the first unit sent to France on the outbreak of the First World War. Her work was recognised with an order of the Royal Red Cross in 1916, and a GBE – the highest class of the Order…

It was largely due to Josiah Wedgwood that the making of pottery was transformed into a modern industry in the 18th century. He was ambitious to sell his ware not just locally, but nationally and internationally. He experimented with different clays to produce a lighter body that didn’t require a heavy glaze. The result was called creamware and, when a dinner service was sent to Queen Charlotte, the name was changed to Queen’s Ware – something of a public relations coup. To meet his ambitions, he realised that he needed to revolutionise the industry. He was the chief promoter of the Trent & Mersey Canal, which enabled him to bring in special clays from the south-west of England and flint from East Anglia, as well as distribute his finished products.…

FAMILY HISTORY GROUPS People will often be intrigued by your story and willing to help. Their local knowledge may point you in the right direction. The county archives service is hoping to make its own website (bedfordshire.gov.uk/archive) more user-friendly in the near future. “There is a vast amount of information on our site but it is not always as easy to find as we would like,” Service Manager Pamela Birch explains. Meanwhile, the catalogue (bedsarchivescat.bedford.gov.uk) has recently been upgraded and currently includes 85 per cent of the catalogues available – while The National Archives Discovery contains catalogues not yet available. Burials and grave inscriptions Researching burial records and grave inscriptions is a great way to find out more details about your ancestor. One useful website for tracking down these records is findagrave.com, which can be searched for free. 1 Navigate to the homepage where you will see various options including one to search for famous graves. Assuming that your ancestor was not famous, click on the option on the right-hand side to ‘Search 132 million grave records’. 2 This will take you to the search page. Over the years I have regularly searched in vain for an explanation of the event or people used on your front cover. I am a committee member of the Royal Air Forces Association, Itchen and Hamble Branch. I am also a subscriber to your magazine. At the branch, we have two framed sets of medals that belonged to past members. Jodie Kidd’s journey included research into her great grandfather, Sir Rowland Frederick Hodge. He was a shipbuilder, who had his own company, but suffered disgrace after being convicted of food hoarding in 1918. Nonetheless, he was awarded a baronetcy in 1921, despite the conviction, and Jodie went to the Parliamentary archives to find out how and why. This masterclass deals with the common problem of having too many candidates to choose from. How do you separate out this John Smith from that John Smith? Unfortunately, people in the past chose first names from a more limited range, so it is possible to have three or even four men all called ‘John’ born around the same time with the same surname, even quite a rare surname, leaving no immediately obvious way of picking the right person. If you do not have enough information to differentiate between people, you must resist the temptation to take the candidate with the most likely looking birth dates or place of birth, and put him or her into your tree without further thought. Irish parish registers online for first time Thousands of free Catholic parish records have been uploaded to the web following the National Library of Ireland’s most ambitious digitisation project to date More than a century’s worth of Irish records have been made available on the internet for the first time. The National Library of Ireland (NLI) in Dublin has uploaded 373,000 digital images of Catholic parish registers to registers.nli.ie, where they can be accessed completely free of charge. Mainly covering baptisms and marriages, the records – scanned from the NLI’s microfilm copies – reveal details of people across 1,086 parishes between the 1740s and 1880s. A DUCHESS IN DANGER An accident which might have been serious happened to the bathing machine of the Grand Duchess Helen of Russia, at Ostend, on Wednesday morning. The Grand Duchess, in order not to be seen by the other bathers, had the door of her machine protected by a large awning, and the wind being high beat with such violence against it, combined with the action of the waves, made the wheels sink deeply into the sand. When, therefore, the Princess having taken her bath entered the machine to return to land, the driver had to make his horse pull violently in order to put the machine in motion. Although the Union of Crowns joined Scotland with England and Wales under one flag in 1606, Scots Law remained as an independent legal system, resulting in some peculiar differences in the way genealogical records were created there. Paul Hollywood knew that he had Scottish roots, but after visiting places where his ancestors worked and finding out more about them, Paul finally felt he “had something to hang his hat on”. Certificates are a product of civil registration, but major life events were still recorded in church parish registers even after civil registration was introduced. Now that more and more parish registers are coming online, it is worth checking the subscription websites (as well as familysearch.org) to see if there is a parish register entry that may save you the cost of a certificate. This is particularly useful for marriages, as the details you will find in a post-1837 parish register marriage entry will be the same as on a marriage certificate. But be aware that a baptism entry is not a record of birth – some baptisms happened long after the birth – and although burials will be close to the date of death, they provide far less information than…

There were two emerging themes to champion migration in the first half of the 19th century: firstly, to serve as a remedy for poverty and unemployment at home, and, secondly, to provide labour and value to undeveloped areas in North America and, later, South Africa and Australasia. However, it wasn’t until 1826 that an Emigration Committee was established to specifically examine the conditions of the poor in the UK with a view to fostering and promoting emigration to the Empire. It is also a great introduction to ‘who’s who’ in what has become the FEPoW community and a way of keeping in touch with what is going on. The website announces and records events where veterans, families, researchers and authors are present and speeches made – a particular feature is its connectivity to other resources. This means being extra diligent and collecting information about everybody, generation by generation, and putting them in the correct places on your tree. Work on your ancestor, all their siblings and cousins. According to church records, William Kettlewell married Elizabeth Kaberry in 1796 in the Anglican Church, Pateley Bridge, West Riding of Yorkshire, by licence. Hardwicke’s 1754 Marriage Act meant nonconformists had to marry in an Anglican church. William’s occupation was given as a ‘Gentleman’ on the original document but there is no indication of the couple’s ages. They may have married by licence for various reasons, such as the imminent arrival of a baby, departure of the groom (particularly in the case of soldiers), or a desire not to have banns read in the Church of England. Residency status is unlikely to be relevant as in this case the couple were both recorded as being ‘of this parish’. Pottery has been made in Britain since the Stone Age, but the modern industry has its origins in the early-18th century. At one time, there were small potteries serving purely local needs all over Britain, producing everyday items such as cups and bowls. The larger industrial units developed where the basic commodities were readily available – good clay and coal to fire the kilns – such as South Wales, southern Scotland and north-east England. Many districts developed their own specialities; for example, the major manufacturers of porcelain were in Chelsea and Worcester, while north-east England – particularly Sunderland – became famous in the 19th century for lustreware. How long have you been doing your family history? I started researching 28 years ago after my father Douglas Roy Andrews died. I found his birth certificate and a solicitor’s document, signed under oath by his mother, where his surname was changed from Gerry to Andrews when he was five years old. On Good Friday 1865, the American Civil War was finally drawing to a close after four years of bloodshed.
