Looks after registers for East Sussex, including Brighton and Hove, parish chest material, nonconformist registers, registers of cemeteries, guardians’ records, tithe maps and electoral registers. It also has quarter sessions material for the county, the county council archives, plus probate material from the Archdeaconry of Lewes – will registers, registered and unregistered wills, and probate inventories. The Keep also holds collections formerly housed at the Brighton History Centre, with more than 20,000 books and pamphlets, county newspapers (back to 1749), Brighton papers (back to 1806), and the Argus back to 1880.
