nbox the Rega Planar 6 and you’d be forgiven for expecting Ua turntable experience not dissimilar to the company’s long line of Award-winning turntables. And so it is. Yet, when this model first appeared, it marked a huge step up in performance from the previous generation – and that former Award-winner was hardly shabby. The previous RP6 came fitted with an Exact moving-magnet cartridge – and that option is still available on this current model (for £1259), but the company currently offers a variant with its Ania moving-coil cartridge. Like the Planar 8 (see p42) the ‘10’ takes its inspiration from Rega’s no-expense-spared Naiad flagship turntable. The result should be something that offers a good slice of the Naiad’s performance but at a far more approachable, though still premium, price. There’s that cut-out plinth design again… The material used is an ultralight-weight Tancast 8 polyurethane foam core sandwiched between two layers of HPL (High Pressure Laminate). The idea is to create a rigid but extremely low-mass base to support the various elements of the deck. Founded around a decade ago, Vertere Acoustics is a hard company to define. It initially focused on making high-end cables, later branching out into high-end turntables. That might not seem the most logical of steps for a cable company, but Vertere has stuck at it, slowly increasing its range of vinyl-related products to include other decks, arms, a cartridge and supports, not forgetting own-brand records too. While Rega used to make a high-end DAC called ‘io’, the naming of its latest amplifier is almost certainly a nod to the familial link with its big brother, the excellent Rega Brio. It’s not far off half its price or half its performance – and so, quite reasonably, it has half its name. The 30W-per-channel, entry-level io can be purchased individually, or as part of Rega’s System One all-in-one proposition with the Planar 1 turntable and Kyte speakers (£999). It borrows the power amplifier and phono stage design from its elder sibling and that goes a long way to explain the pleasing sonic resemblance between the two. Naim’s original Nait XS, introduced in 2008, was designed to be a step up from the basic Nait integrated amp – offering improved sound and greater grunt from a similarly slimline package. Now, 13 years on, the Nait XS 3 provides the same function. If it looks similar to its predecessor, the XS 2, that’s because the third generation version only had a light revision. The previous line-level amplifier gained a moving-magnet phono stage and a tweak in the power amplifier circuitry to improve its responsiveness. As unsung heroes go, the humble phono stage is surely a big hitter. It shouldn’t simply be commended for its work, it should be up there on the hi-fi podium wearing a medal for Outstanding Achievement. But it isn’t. The truth is that these plain little boxes are seriously undervalued in the context of most vinyl-based hi-fi systems. And yet the work they do is invaluable. We’d even go as far as saying that the phono stage is the most important piece of electronics in such a set-up. And here’s why. Producing any five-star ‘duo’ device is no cakewalk; your end product needs to possess complementary talents – different enough to validate the inclusion of both parties while similar enough to form a cohesive whole. The Duo referred to in the name of Cambridge’s latest phono stage – released alongside the moving-magnet-only Solo pre-amp – would seem to refer to its ability to handle both MM and MC turntable cartridges. However, after spending some considerable time with Nagra’s Classic Phono, we wish it didn’t cost quite so much. It’s not that the product’s sound doesn’t match that hefty price tag; more that it puts this glorious piece of kit beyond the reach of so many people who would appreciate it. What do you need? The basic building blocks are: a turntable, a phono stage, an analogue-to-digital converter with USB output, and a computer with suitable recording software. There are turntables that come with a phono stage, analogue-to-digital converter and USB output built in. However, most are at the budget end and focus on getting the job done rather than doing it particularly well. Your recordings won’t necessarily reflect the quality of sound possible from your records, though Audio Technica’s AT-LP5 and Sony PS-HX500 vinyl-ripping decks do their best to buck that trend. KEF has dabbled in the headphone market since 2013, experimenting with both over-ear and in-ear models over the years. You don’t need to set eyes on Pro-Ject’s Primary E turntable to know it has a lot going for it. It’s the most affordable traditionally designed Pro-Ject turntable – the brand’s £179 Elemental deck has a platter that sits over a long and thin, plank-like chassis (imagine a pizza draped over a wooden serving board). And the E is also more or less a twin of the original Pro-Ject Primary deck to which we also handed five stars. Like most twins, things are very similar (the pricing is comparable) although there are one or two key differences; for example, the Primary E’s power supply is built into the deck rather than the plug. Audio-Technica’s original AT-LP5 turntable was a winner. Launched in 2016, its combination of solid engineering, useful features and fine sound were enough to make it one of our go-to recommendations for anyone wanting a sensibly priced, fuss-free record player. So it’s no surprise to find that Audio-Technica decided not to change its winning formula for this LP5x model. Why would it? At first, it’s hard to notice any changes between the models, but look carefully and you’ll find the addition of a 78rpm speed option alongside the usual 33⅓ and 45rpm. Perhaps of more relevance to most, there’s also a different cartridge, the AT-VM95E. We can’t think of another product that has dominated its market W sector with the authority of Rega’s Planar 3 turntables. The original was launched in the late-1970s, and since then subsequent iterations have invariably remained the obvious choice in the class. The Rega RP3s haven’t changed much in appearance over the decades. Put the original next to this one and most people would be hard pushed to find any differences beyond the smarter plinth and the updated tonearm. This turntable’s generational changes have mainly been about steady evolution, with the aim of improving performance. But, by the company’s usual standards, the shift made in 2016 – when the deck reclaimed its original Planar 3 name (from that of RP3) – was nothing less than seismic. Full-on redesign Just about…

Rather than being a gentle evolution of the previous (and still rather good) RP8, the Planar 8 takes its inspiration from Rega’s Naiad – the company’s spare-no-expense uber-deck. Just look at it. This skeletal player can’t but turn your head with its angular shape and aggressive cutouts. The idea is to minimise plinth mass while increasing rigidity; the plinth is 30 per cent lighter than that used on the previous model – and more rigid with it. It might seem like an odd thing to say, but we suspect that SME doesn’t view itself as a hi-fi manufacturer. Talk to anyone at the company and it’s clear the brand is more about cutting-edge precision engineering than product types. SME makes world-class turntables and arms, but a huge slice of its business is work done for the medical, military, aerospace and Formula One industries. The single thread tying all these clients together is the need for the highest standards in workmanship, almost regardless of cost. Few hi-fi brands enjoy the same kind of high-street recognition as Technics does, and that’s pretty much down to the legendary status of its SL1210 turntables in DJ circles. So when the brand was relaunched by parent company Panasonic back in 2014, it was something of a surprise that record players weren’t part of the equation. But demand forced the company’s hand, and there are now five domestic models, ranging from around a grand to the high-end beast we have on test here. I t’s been over a decade since we last reviewed anything from Norwegian company Electrocompaniet, so we aren’t quite sure what to expect from the ECI 80D integrated amplifier. As things turn out, it’s an impressively polished performer that’s brimming with useful features. We can’t imagine too many occasions where the ECI 80D will be caught short in a price appropriate two-channel set-up. It has a good range of digital and analogue inputs, including a moving-magnet phono stage, multiple coaxials and opticals, as well as two-way Bluetooth in high-quality aptX HD form. If you play records, no other electronic component in your system has as much impact on the sound as the humble phono stage. There aren’t many talented units around the £500 mark, so when we come across something as capable as Moon’s 110LP v2, it’s something to celebrate. This is a neatly made aluminium box finished to the high standards we’ve come to expect from Moon. The curved front panel is beautifully machined and makes the 110LP v2 look classier than most of the competition. LG’s C-series model has been the go-to pick of its OLED range for several years. It has always been the most affordable model with the company’s best panel and picture processing wizardry. Spending more would get you a fancier design and potentially better sound, but the picture would be no different. That’s not the case in 2021. The Hisense Roku R50A7200GTUK is likely to be the cheapest 50in TV we’ll see this year from a major manufacturer. It promises a good-sized, punchy 4K HDR image and all the major apps and services you could need, without so much as an additional box or stick in sight. In an era of change, not even Rega’s best-selling turntable has been immune to the desire for a fresh approach. Yet, despite a considerable list of tweaks to the original Planar 1 a few years ago, the British company’s signature sound remains. Those changes were unquestionably for the best; they brought in the RB110 tonearm, with precision bearings and automatic bias adjustment, and combined it with a tracking weight whose ideal position is already marked for you. It means you can set up faster than a speed-metal anthem. When we first clapped eyes on Pro-Ject’s new Juke Box EW turntable-on-steroids, our first thought was “brand new? You’re retro”, just like Tricky in the mid-1990s. The second thought, which was along the lines of “we haven’t seen a music centre in years”, swiftly followed. Of course, this isn’t a music centre in the mid-to-late 20th-century sense. Oh no, it’s a lot more brand-new and retro than that. What Pro-Ject has done with the Juke Box E is to have one of those ideas that is simple and obvious – once someone else has had it. The rebirth of the Technics brand has been fascinating. Since 2014, T the brand has released a steady stream of products with varying degrees of success, but more recent offerings have indicated that it has truly hit its stride. The high-end SL-1000R turntable, introduced in early 2018, was the first product to confirm that the brand really could deliver. We were so impressed that it has now become our reference record player. That good work continued with the more-affordable SL-1500C. This is a less elaborate mini-me of the high-end model, still using a core-less direct-drive motor with sophisticated speed-management circuitry, a hefty, well damped chassis and a version of the company’s long-running S-shaped arm. The Vertere DG-1 Dynamic Groove is a deck/arm package that offers a fair dose of the performance of Vertere’s top-end turntables but at a far more approachable outlay. It’s designed to be easy to use, and even has the option of a fitted cartridge for those who want a complete package. That cartridge is Vertere’s Magneto moving-magnet, and it’s essentially a rebadged Audio-Technica AT-VM520EB with a different-coloured body. Bought separately it costs £220. As part of the Vertere DG-1 package, it’s more than capable of justifying the extra £100 it adds to the base DG-1 price of £2750. But, think of it as something to get you going, rather than the final destination. Ultimately, the DG-1’s abilities demand something better. VPI’s Prime record player has been something of a favourite of ours since we reviewed it back in 2015. Since then, it has become one of our go-to recommendations for anyone wanting a true taste of high-end vinyl replay without a five-figure budget. The new Prime 21 (the number signifies the model year) aims to build on that solid foundation with a series of changes aimed at improving performance, ease of use and cosmetics. Michael Phelps wouldn’t be considered the greatest Olympian of all time had he settled for his gold rush in 2004 and not persevered by coming back every four years to win some more. Likewise, the Rega Elex-R has been nothing if not persistent since its arrival, when it was rewarded with a first Award in 2014. It managed to keep hold of that Award right up until 2019 when Cambridge launched the excellent – and slightly pricier – CXA81. Still, the Elex-R remains a class leader and a great alternative – especially in the context of this round-up; the CXA81 has no phono stage. It is said that if an optimist sees a glass is half full and a pessimist sees it as half empty, then an engineer will tell you that the glass is twice as large as it needs to be. There is always room for improvement. Sometimes, though, that margin is so fractional it can be difficult to comprehend just how. Take the Rega Fono MM as an example of such a conundrum. After the MK2 version received a What Hi-Fi? Award, it had plenty of capable competition, but none was sufficient to relieve it of its crown. Even now, that incarnation remains a testament to just what can be achieved at this price level. This plain-looking box turns out to be a carefully considered product with a wide range of settings that ensures electronic compatibility with most price-compatible MM/MC cartridges. Vertere Acoustics’ Phono-1 MkII may not look anything special, but if you’re after a phono stage at anywhere near the £1000 mark, it simply has to be heard. That clean front with its solo power switch isn’t the panel to focus on. With its initially dizzying collection of dipswitches, the underside of the case is far more interesting.
