The researchers involved nearly 2,000 people with an average age of 80 who didn’t have dementia at the start of the trial to see what happened over the following years. The study participants with the highest cognitive activity scores were reading, playing cards or doing puzzles several times a week, while those with the lowest scores were exercising their brains less frequently, often as little as a few times a year. When it comes to booze, there’s no such thing as a safe amount, according to some researchers. Even ‘light’ drinkers—drinking no more than two glasses of wine a day—increase their risk for several cancers. One in seven new cancers—that’s 100,000 cases worldwide—happen to light to moderate drinkers, says the World Health Organization (WHO). Breast, colon and oral cancers are the most common among drinkers. Kevin Shield, from the WHO’s International Agency for Research on Cancer, says: “Alcohol causes cancer in numerous ways. According to a study of over 300,000 drinkers included in the UK Biobank database, those who consumed alcohol mainly at mealtimes—even in fairly high quantities—saw a significant reduction in their risk of cancer, heart disease and overall mortality. Drinkers in this category consumed mainly wine or beer, and at levels ranging from 50 to 300 grams per week. That upper limit of 300 grams is equivalent to more than a half bottle of wine or two pints of beer every day. Photobiomodulation (PBM) is being tested as a new approach to modulate the microbiome in central nervous system conditions like Parkinson’s disease. PBM involves the use of red or near-infrared light to heal and regenerate injured or degenerating tissue. Drinking three cups of coffee a day is one answer to chronic liver disease (CLD). It reduces your chances of getting CLD and makes it more benign if you do suffer from it, halving your chances of dying. Any type of coffee seems to have some protective effect, although instant coffee is the least effective. Decaffeinated and ground coffee reduces the risk of dying from CLD by 63 percent, while those drinking instant coffee saw their risk drop by 38 percent. On average, coffee drinkers reduced their risk of CLD by 21 percent and of dying from it by 49 percent, say researchers from the University of Southampton. Eating more plant-based foods—including chickpeas, lentils and peas—lowers your risk of multiple sclerosis (MS). The legume family is rich in isoflavones, compounds that help stimulate gut bacteria that seem to protect against the disease. People with MS are low in the bacteria that break down isoflavones, and an unhealthy gut microbiome is increasingly being suspected as a trigger for the disease. The bacteria can certainly protect against MS, say researchers from the University of Iowa. It’s been the stuff of conspiracy theory, but scientists really are adding microscopic chips to injections to monitor the body’s processes. Scientists at Columbia University in New York are exploiting advances in microchip technology to inject people with whole-body monitoring systems that are powered by ultrasound. The chips will enhance the information gleaned from a standard ultrasound scan, says Ken Shepherd, a professor of electrical engineering. A chip inserted in the body could also measure body temperature or scan for biomarkers, for instance. We need our sleep. Even after just three nights of poor sleep, we are more irritable and angrier—and our body starts to feel aches and pains and suffers from gut and breathing problems. Six hours of uninterrupted sleep is around the average most of us need. Get much less than that, and it starts to show. Researchers at the University of South Florida tracked the sleeping habits and wellbeing of around 2,000 people. More than 40 percent had at least one night of sleep loss, losing 90 minutes of sleep, and even this made them angrier and more irritable—but three nights of poor sleep triggered physical symptoms such as breathing problems and gut issues. A Covid infection will give you natural immunity for at least a year—and it could be much longer. Only those who haven’t had the infection should be prioritized for vaccination, say researchers from the Barcelona Institute for Global Health. They monitored the antibody levels of 173 healthcare workers who had had Covid-19, and were surprised their immune response markers were still high a year later. Almost 100 years ago, the German physician, researcher and Nobel Laureate Otto Warburg proposed that the primary cause of cancer is a metabolic dysfunction of the mitochondria. Although the drug has been studied as a potential antidepressant for years, researchers have been unable to understand just how it could work. A research team from Yale has discovered a single dose of psilocybin increases the density of dendritic spines, small protrusions on nerve cells that help information pass between neurons. Fraud is so rampant in medical research that the default position should be to assume a study has been faked unless proven to be true, a former editor of one of the world’s leading medical journals has said. Surprisingly low, and it could be less than 1 percent, which suggests people develop natural immunity from the virus, a new research study estimates. One important factor to preventing dementia after surgery may be the essential trace mineral lithium.
