In fact, having one less hour of shut-eye in the morning lowers your chances of major depression by as much as 23 percent, researchers have discovered. It’s been known for some time that there’s a link between sleeping habits and mental wellbeing—night owls are twice as likely to suffer from depression as early risers, or larks, for instance—but it’s been difficult to get a more detailed picture, partly because mood disorders can disrupt sleep patterns. Just how did the great new wonder drug for Alzheimer’s ever get approval? Despite garnering headlines as the first breakthrough in countering the disease in more than 20 years, Aduhelm didn’t prove in any pre-approval clinical trials that it actually worked. Instead, it reduces beta-amyloid protein clumps in the brain—and although these have been seen in Alzheimer’s patients, there’s no evidence they contribute to cognitive decline. Despite this shortcoming, the US Food and Drug Administration has approved the drug but has asked for further tests to demonstrate its effectiveness. Eating a vegetarian diet can give you extra protection if you’re a smoker or drink excessively. Compared with meat eaters, vegetarians have health biomarkers that are not affected by smoking or drinking. These biomarkersincluding cholesterol and inflammation levels—suggest a lower chance of developing cancer, heart disease or other age-related chronic conditions. Researchers from Glasgow University assessed the health and diets of more than 177,000 people between the ages of 37 and 73; among them, just over 4,000 participants were vegetarian. Even after accounting for age, obesity, smoking and alcohol consumption, the vegetarians scored better in 13 biomarkers that predict the risk of diabetes, heart disease, cancer, liver function, bone and joint health and kidney function. Nearly half the cosmetics we use contain toxic chemicals that are linked to a range of serious health problems. PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) have been found in foundation creams, mascaras and lip products. Researchers at the University of Notre Dame analyzed more than 200 cosmetics and discovered that 56 percent of the foundation creams, 48 percent of lip products and 47 percent of mascaras contained high levels of fluorine, a ‘red flag’ indicator of PFAS use. “PFAS is a persistent chemical. When it gets into the bloodstream, it stays there and accumulates. The AstraZeneca jab has been the Covid vaccine associated with blood clotting—but doctors in Japan are beginning to see the same problem with Pfizer’s mRNA vaccine. At least 10 people in Japan have died from brain clots after being given the vaccine; it is “possibly” the cause, even though brain bleeding—intracranial hemorrhage (ICH)—has not been listed as an adverse reaction, say researchers at the Kagawa University Hospital. The origins of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s are still a mystery—but scientists think the culprit could be gut microbes. Researchers have suspected the diseases could start in the gut, but finding the responsible bacteria has been like finding the proverbial needle in the haystack. A research team from the University of Florida think they’re honing in on that needle with the help of an unlikely ally, a translucent worm called C. elegans, to help them screen the human ‘microbiome’ of gut microbes. These microscopic worms develop protein aggregates similar to the type found in Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s when they are exposed to bacterial strains harmful to humans, but another panel of bacteria known to be beneficial in the human gut was able to counteract this harmful effect.…

Covid-19 deaths could be overstated by as much as 23 percent. Nearly a quarter of people are dying with the virus, but not from it—and yet are being recorded as Covid victims. Instead, they are dying from a range of other health problems, such as cancer and heart disease, figures from the UK’s Office for National Statistics (ONS) have revealed. If the reporting practice started from the outset of the Covid epidemic, the UK’s Covid mortality rate has been overstated by around 29,000 deaths. Girls need to have many more genetic mutations in the brain before they are affected by the disorder, say researchers at Yale School of Medicine. Researchers from the University of New Mexico assessed the heart health of 705 Tsimane using a CAC (coronary artery calcium) test, an established predictor of heart problems. Memory loss in Alzheimer’s patients could be reversed following the discovery of a molecule that can rejuvenate the brain. People with Alzheimer’s have low stores of the molecule, called microRNA-132, especially in the brain’s hippocampus region. The hippocampus is linked to memory loss, a typical symptom of the disease. Researchers from the Netherlands Institute for Neuroscience say that healthy people’s brains go through constant renewal, or neurogenesis, which allows us to maintain cognitive and memory abilities into old age. But it’s a process that isn’t happening in Alzheimer’s patients, the researchers say, because they have low levels of the molecule, which appears to be the trigger for neurogenesis. Coffee doesn’t only make us feel more awake. Scans reveal it helps improve connection between areas of the brain that regulate motor control and alertness. It’s the first time the brains of coffee drinkers and non-drinkers have been compared by using fMRI scanning technology—and there really is a difference, at least according to research funded by the Institute for Scientific Information on Coffee. Researchers at the University of Minho in Portugal scanned the brains of 37 people who drank coffee every day and 24 non-coffee drinkers while they were resting and performing a task. If you’ve had a heart attack, don’t become anxious or depressed—it could double your chances of a second one. Cardiologists should be prescribing meditation and relaxation classes along with the usual meds to a heart attack patient, say researchers from Emory University. That’s especially important for younger people—between the ages of 18 and 61—who’ve survived a heart attack. The researchers tracked the progress of 283 heart attack survivors and assessed their levels of depression, anxiety and anger for up to six months after the attack. Within five years, 80 patients suffered a second attack or stroke—and half of those had high marks on the stress calculator compared to 22 percent whose stress level markers were lower. The possibility of a connection between aluminum in the brain and Alzheimer’s disease is an idea that just won’t go away—and now new research adds weight to the theory. Traces of aluminum have been discovered in so-called “plaques” and “tangles” from the brains of Alzheimer’s sufferers. These are characteristic aggregations of abnormal proteins used to diagnose the disease. The samples, analyzed by researchers from Keele University, were taken from people who had a family history of early-onset Alzheimer’s.
