Beginning March 2, the Cheyenne Frontier Days Old West Museum in Cheyenne, Wyoming, will host the 43rd edition of the Western Spirit Art Show & Sale. More than 400 works of Western art will be on view during the annual show, which continues through April 14. Sorrel Sky Gallery has expanded to New York City with a gallery in the SoHo area of Manhattan. With the Rocky Mountains as a centerpiece to the landscape, along with a rich cultural history, the state of Colorado is quite the locale for Western artists and enthusiasts alike. Originally settled by the Native American tribes of the region—such as the Apache, Arapaho, Cheyenne, Shoshone and Ute—Colorado became major part of Westward exploration and expansion, which included the mining boom beginning in the 19th century. March is a busy month in the art world, and it’s also a busy time for painter Kim Randleas, who will be showing her work at two major March shows: The Russell and the Out West Art Show, both in Great Falls, Montana. Maynard Dixon (1875-1946) arrived in Nevada on horseback in 1901, on the first of many short and extended visits that would occur over 40 years. He had been encouraged by his friend and mentor, the journalist Charles Lummis, to “travel east to see the real West.” Lummis (1859-1928) had walked the 2,200 miles between Cincinnati and Los Angeles in 1884, falling in love with the Southwest, its landscapes and its people. Dixon and his friend, painter Edward Borein (1872-1945), set out from Oakland, California, on their way to Montana with six horses carrying living, camping and art supplies. One of the last images we received for this issue was Morgan Weistling’s High Stakes, a painting he is sending to the Briscoe Western Art Museum for its Night of Artists exhibition this month. The painting shows a table surrounded by four gamblers, their faces illuminated in warm light from an oil lamp amid the cards and coins. A set of hands at the bottom of the painting reveals that we, the viewers, are the fifth gambler at the table. It’s hard to tell, but the cards he’s holding look mighty good. This painting reminds me a lot of making every issue of Western Art Collector. We send out artwork requests for all the shows we want to cover, and then we wait for images to get dealt into play.…

Now on view at the Buffalo Bill Center of the West in Cody, Wyoming, is the exhibition James Bama’s Photographs: Portraits of the West. The late artist, who died in 2022, was a famous resident of Cody. His early career was spent in illustration, but his later fine art career focused on portraits of subjects from all around the West, from Native Americans to working cowboys to rodeo riders. The photography in the show largely comes from the 1970s and 1980s. “While Bama is most celebrated as an illustrator and painter, this exhibition underscores the foundation of his art in photography,” the museum notes. “Bama’s sharp eye for composition, detail and context is evident in his photographic portraits, which capture the complexities of Western histories and identities. The Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art in Indianapolis has received a legacy gift of $2.75 million from the Christel DeHaan Family Foundation, which has been distributing numerous gifts totaling more than $55 million to nonprofit arts organizations. The legacy gifts were per the wishes of the late Christel DeHaan, the prominent Indianapolis businesswoman and philanthropist, who died in 2020 at age 77. The DeHaan foundation’s gift will be added to the Eiteljorg Museum’s endowment. Of that, $2 million will be used specifically for general operating support of the institution’s greatest needs. Also, $750,000 in the endowment gift will be used to support living artists, such as Native American music and dance groups who perform at the museum.…

From the collection of the Mamaroneck Public Library in New York, Heritage Auctions hosts In the Wild, a sale of paintings by renowned artist Philip R. Goodwin (1881-1935). The collection, originally donated to the library in 1938 by the artist’s brother, T. Raymond Goodwin, includes 66 lots that feature not only the impeccable wildlife and sporting paintings the artist was known for, but also personal memorabilia. In late 2023, the Bone Creek Museum of Agrarian Art in David City, Nebraska, received a major gift of 24 paintings by Gary Ernest Smith from the Overland Gallery of Minneapolis. A number of the paintings are now on display in the exhibition Gary Ernest Smith: Elemental Landscapes. The donation was made possible because of an expansion project and a $6.2 million funding campaign that will add new exhibition space at the museum. Bone Creek is renovating and renewing its Nebraska space into a state-of-the-art national venue. After 16 years as a full-time singer-songwriter, Wayne Kerr has returned to what stirred his creative heart as a child—his art. During the past seven years, this artistic journey has led Kerr back into all things “West.” This road has garnered him recognition at events across the country including The Russell and the Coors Western Art Exhibit & Sale, among others. Kerr’s roots grow deep in the West. His great grandfather was Cherokee, and served as a Texas Ranger in the early 1900s. “Upon his passing at the age of 94, he still had two bullets in him that doctors deemed ‘too much trouble to remove’ 60 years previously,” the artist says, adding that history and tradition help him paint images of the West. In 1931, Walter Prescott Webb, a proud Texan, published his book The Great Plains, which argued that the 98th meridian was the dividing line between the East and West. “At this fault the ways of life and of living changed. Practically every institution that was carried across it was either broken and remade or else greatly altered,” Webb wrote. The line—which cuts the country in half from the Dakotas to Texas—is purely imaginary, but its presence is felt strongly in San Antonio, which hugs the west side of the 98th. For this year’s edition of the Women Artists of the West’s National Exhibition and Sale, titled Dreamweavers, attendees can expect “a feast for the eyes and an inspiration for the soul,” says show chair Nori Thorne.
