Welcome to the October issue of Western Art Collector! Leaves are turning, kids are back to school, and there is a natural order of fall settling in around us. It is usually this time of year that we hear stories from our readers about buying and selling, but we also hear from them as they reflect on their current collections. Starting October 19 and running through January 2, 2024, is the American Plains Artists 38th Annual Juried Exhibit & Sale. The annual event will take place at the Pearce Museum at Navarro College in Corsicana, Texas. The opening reception will take place Thursday, October 19, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. The public is invited to attend the celebration, which will feature up to 110 artworks in both two and three dimensions that depict the American Great Plains region, including its landscape, wildlife, people and ways of life in historical or modern times. The heterogeneity of the American West has always been a given, but for many years popular culture only celebrated a thin slice through its complexities—cowboys and Indians, sheriffs and outlaws, barmaids and barroom brawls and, of course, the landscape. Over time, visual artists, writers and scientists began to look into and beyond the romantic stereotypes and to present a fuller understanding of the richness of the West. In the coming months, museums will host exhibitions that will examine the roles of women, gays and lesbians, and people of color in the development of the West, as well as developments in technology that have influenced its depiction. Founded in 1987, the National Museum of Wildlife Art is a world-class museum and nonprofit located in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. The museum’s collection boasts more than 5,000 artworks representing wild animals from around the world. Featuring work by prominent artists such as N.C. Wyeth, Georgia O’Keeffe, Andy Warhol, Ai Weiwei, Thomas Moran and Carl Rungius, the museum’s unsurpassed permanent collection chronicles much of the history of wildlife in art, from 2,500 B.C. to the present. Located in heart of downtown Steamboat Springs, Colorado, the Steamboat Art Museum has become one of the preeminent regional art museums in America. Starting in 2013, the Woolaroc Museum & Wildlife Preserve began hosting a biennial show that focuses on a group of artists—the work they are doing now coupled with work from their past. The show, the Woolaroc Retrospective Exhibit & Sale, has been a hit with collectors, who get to view old work while also purchasing new work, all in a museum setting. On October 14, the unique exhibition returns to Bartlesville, Oklahoma. It will feature 11 artists who represent a dynamic and diverse group of Western artists working in many mediums and styles. A new exhibition at the Booth Western Art Museum features the collection of Steve and Milah Lynn, who developed a deep love for Western art while attending the prestigious Prix de West over the years. Beginning in mid-September, Eye on the Prize: The Steve & Milah Lynn Collection will showcase 30 paintings and six sculptures from a number of renowned Western artists. Among them are Walter Matia, Curt Walters, Tucker Smith and Martin Grelle, to name just a few. Included in the exhibition is Sherry Sander’s cast bronze sculpture Cougars, depicting two big cats at rest. Traveling from the Witte Museum to the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum is Black Cowboys: An American Story, a significant exhibition that is paving the way for a more diverse understanding of Black lives in the West. More specifically, the exhibition follows the lives of Black cowboys, as well as Black women and children “who labored on the ranches of Texas and participated in cattle drives before the Civil War through the turn of the 20th century,” explains museum representatives. Colorado-based artist Michael Esch has been a professional painter for more than 40 years and his realistic work is widely collected around the country. Fascinated by cloudscapes and landforms, Esch works include oil, acrylic and multimedia glass installations. He has also done numerous commissions ranging from small to large paintings for private, corporate and institutional collections. “Nothing worthwhile is easy or without challenge, and that is how I approach art,” he says. “My cloudscape and landscape paintings are a relatively straightforward way to express how I feel about nature, how striking it is now and how it may have looked hundreds of years ago. Arizona-based painter LJ McLoughlin is constantly intrigued by the subjects that the Grand Canyon State offers. “I have always painted Arizona. Even before I married a cowboy, moved there and was dunked into Arizona ranch life, I was fascinated by the Arizona landscapes and people,” she says. “The stark contrast of sky, earth and vegetation, and the visual experience of seeing her craggy rocks and rugged vistas, have always been a subject of great interest to me.” McLoughlin remembers visiting Northern Arizona 35 years ago and “being blown away by the desert light and moved by the people who live there,” she adds. “Since [moving] to Arizona, I have continued to pursue this journey of recording the beauty of Western life. Among some of the top offerings are works from a private collection curated by Janet and Daniel Hidding, who started acquiring artwork in the 1980s. Online bidding has been available at Scottsdale Art Auction’s sales for many years, even prior to the pandemic when auction houses supercharged their online capabilities. But the Arizona-based auction had never hosted an exclusive online-only sale before. All that changed on August 26 when it presented an online sale featuring 375 lots of Western art. After spirited bidding, the live online sale performed strongly with a 94 sell-through rate and realizing more than $1.28 million in sales, which came exceptionally close to $1.3 million, the high-estimate value of the entire sale. The top lot was Lon Megargee’s The Last Drop from his Stetson, one of the most iconic images in the West. After many long months of being A pestered about the TV show Yellowstone, I have finally given in and started watching it here and there between magazine deadlines and art trips. I’m way behind, so it’s going to be a journey to get caught up. I relented for several reasons: First, the visual look of Yellowstone and some of the thematic elements within the storylines certainly relate to imagery and ideas within Western art, and it’s been fun watching connections between the two develop. Whether it’s the iconography of cowboys on horseback or the issues involving land rights and conservation, there is a lot in the show that connects back to fine art. On July 22, Women Artists of the West kicked off its 53rd annual national exhibition at the Carriage Factory Art Gallery in Newton, Kansas. The show, titled No Place Like Home, marked a stunning return for the prominent art group, which celebrates women artists all around the country. Santa Fe, New Mexico, will welcome the fall season to the City Different during the Canyon Road Paint & Sculpt Out on October 20 and 21. The event will take place on the historic Canyon Road, a three-quarter-mile thoroughfare not far from Downtown Santa Fe that features dozens of galleries and art destinations. As children return to school following long summer breaks, their teachers inevitably ask them a timeless question: What did you do on your summer vacation? For Jason Williams and Carrie Wild, the husband-and-wife team that owns Gallery Wild in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, their answer to that question speaks to the state of Western art—they grew bigger and better. The world’s largest permanent exhibition space for Western art is in Cartersville, Georgia, at the Booth Western Art Museum. Open since 2003 and located just north of Atlanta along I-75, the Booth is the largest museum of its kind in the Southeast and an affiliate to the Smithsonian Institution. At 120,000 square feet, the Booth is an architectural wonder, designed to resemble a modern pueblo and constructed from Bulgarian limestone. William Matthews is a man of many hats: his own, those worn by cowboys in his watercolors and those of the different aspects of his artistic life. In fact, one catalog of his paintings is titled Hats & Headwear. The exhibition, Decades: William Matthews, chronicling five decades of his career, opens at Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West October 10 and continues through April 28, 2024. “My cowboy paintings are probably what people know the best and are possibly most interested in,” he explains. “This show is about a retrospective of my life. For 20 years, Landry Major was a professional photographer specializing in editorial and advertising. “Mostly portraits,” she says, “[until] I reached a point where I wanted to do a project just for myself, something I was passionate about.” Her Keepers of the West series is now hailed as an important body of photographic art within the Western art world. With origins in 19th-century dime novels, pulp magazines were popular among children and teens in the first half of the 20th century. Young people were enthralled with the lore and adventure of the Old West. As the number of titles grew, the covers became increasingly crucial to attracting young readers. Soon after Sue Krzyston moved to Arizona in 1971, she began collecting Native American pottery. When she purchased her first small Santa Clara black pot, little did she know that this would influence her life and career. As her collection of artifacts grew, she also began to paint as a hobby. At the suggestion of her husband, Mike, her focus turned to using her collection as the subject of her compositions. “I consider my paintings an art form within an art form,” she says. “I so admire the beauty and artistry that these talented potters’ and weavers’ hands have created.” Her goal in her highly detailed compositions is to show how using light and shadow will make the objects relate to each other and to the viewer. In the 1980s and 1990s, Debra Keirce was a biochemical engineer leading teams that built pharmaceutical facilities in New England and Indiana. Now an artist, Keirce still draws from that time of her life. “I approach my art with the same project leader mentality, and I look forward to all the problem-solving I get to do each day as I create,” she says.
