One of the enduring qualities of the Cowboy Artists of America is its adherence to traditions. Every spring there is a trail ride, and every fall there is an annual show. Like clockwork, these things have happened largely uninterrupted for 55 years. Then the pandemic struck and the CA was forced to cancel the 2020 annual show. But now the group is back: the CA has announced its 55th Annual Exhibition & Sale for November 5 and 6 in Fort Worth, Texas. This year’s event will return to the Amon G. Nearly a decade ago, painter R. Tom Gilleon created a series of hybrid artworks that were oil paintings merged seamlessly with digital paintings. In one of his most famous works, Fort Mountain, Gilleon painted a landscape of Montana’s Square Butte as it transitioned through the seasons over the course of 32 unique paintings and 19 minutes. The looped video project was sold with a computer to run the video program and a high-definition TV to display it. It was also limited to 10 editions. Gilleon didn’t know it at the time, but he was an early adopter of the NFT, or non-fungible token, which has, in the last six months, merged fine art and digital cryptocurrency in fascinating ways. Artist Amy Lay will be displaying a large collection of works for Mountain Trails Gallery in her new one-woman show. Lay’s oil and pencil works of wildlife are described by art collector’s as “vibrant, loose and comfortable,” while also capturing “the very essence of her subject matter.” Her love of the natural world is quite evident and her biggest goal is to share this appreciation, along with spreading joy through her colorful, powerful imagery. In 2019, Sean Michael Chavez held a solo show at Acosta-Strong Fine Art in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The show sold out in short order, and it felt like validation for the up-and-coming Western painter. “I had only been with the gallery for less than six months. So, in my mind, if I could just sell one painting that would have been validation enough. I was just happy to connect with new people and meet collectors,” the Albuquerque, New Mexico-based artist says. “But then it sold out and quickly. It certainly felt like validation, but more than that it was just gratitude.” Chavez is back at Acosta-Strong for a sequel to that career-making debut. On August 21 and 22, Free Indian Market will welcome visitors to New Mexico with stunning artwork by some of the top Native American artists in the country. The event, held at Santa Fe’s Scottish Rite Temple as well as Federal Park across the street, features a total of three acres of artwork from 500 award-winning artists, including artists from every tribe in New Mexico. The best part about the Western art community is that it can feel both large and small all at once. It’s large because there is an infrastructure built around it, including many great galleries spread out all around the country, entire museums dedicated to this genre of art and even whole Western-focused cities—like Great Falls, Montana, featured in this issue! And yet, it feels small because it’s easy to know everyone and even easier to get pulled into a tight orbit around this close-knit community. Norman Saunders was a sensational pulp artist. He also painted covers for slick magazines, men’s adventure magazines, paperbacks, comic books and bubblegum trading cards. His career started in 1926, at the age of 19, and he retired in 1984, at the age of 77. Over that time he created more than 7,000 published illustrations. Throughout his long career his artistic vision was inspired by a genuine love for the Old West. He was born in 1907 on a pioneer homestead in the Tiger Forest region of northernmost Minnesota, where his father was the game warden for the Chippewa Indian reservation. Charlie Russell doesn’t seem like he would have been an overly sentimental person, which is one way of saying that he probably wouldn’t mind too much that the show bearing his name wasn’t taking place around his March 19 birthday. It’s around that March date that Great Falls, Montana, rolls out the red carpet for art collectors of all varieties as Russell’s hometown celebrates his contributions to Western art. One of the key components of the festivities is The Russell, the exhibition and sale hosted by the C.M. Russell Museum. The Out West Art Show in Great Falls, Montana, is a place for Western art lovers and artists to come together and connect. And after a year of uncertainty and isolation, the need for face-to-face interaction is stronger than ever. The exhibition and sale, held at the Heritage Inn, features dozens and dozens of artist exhibition rooms, where artists like Jennifer Johnson, Troy Collins, Daniel Parker, James Reid, Karen Boylan, Jackie L. Bread and many more, adorn the space with their works. Oil painter Lee Rue says he will be bringing around four to five paintings in total. Few Western painters working today have captured the poetic spirit of the West as profoundly and vividly as R.S. Riddick. After classic training in painting in Southern California, Riddick was drawn to the West by Hollywood movies and an uncle who owned cattle ranches in several Western states. Later he would work in commercial art, but the West kept calling. And he answered. “I’ve loved open spaces, ranching and the Western adventure my entire life,” Riddick says in B. This year marks the 13th annual event for America’s Horse in Art Show & Sale, put on by the American Quarter Horse Association, but this will be the first time the event will combine both virtual and in-person happenings. Maxwell Alexander Gallery in Los Angeles will host a new group exhibition this August featuring a variety of Western paintings from a handful of important gallery artists. The show will feature painters Howard Post, John Moyers, Eric Merrell, Josh Elliot and G. Russell Case, among others. Post’s characteristic paintings of the West are on full view in his simple, yet powerful portrait of a cactus in Saguaro. On August 4 Bonhams will offer a twosession Western Art sale that begins at 10 a.m. with Portrait of the West: The Diane and Sam Stewart Collection.
