The Italian painter Giorgio Morandi was a still life painter in the early 20th century who worked with an assemblage of models that included all the “usual suspects”—subjects such as a vase with a fluted neck, ceramic pitcher with large handle, tall narrow bottle, coffee cup, square bottle with wavy neck and an elusive teacup. Morandi would line his subjects up and paint them. When he was done, he would mix them up and paint them again under different light or different groupings. He did hundreds of these paintings, if not thousands. He would title every single one Natura morta, Italian for “dead nature,” the term used for still life. Morandi’s name doesn’t come up a lot in Western circles, but he comes up when talking with Utah painter Brett…

The natural world has been chronicled throughout the centuries in some of the great wildlife art and landscape paintings. From the mountain ranges to the creatures that populate them, these images resonate with almost anyone who sees them, as there is a connection to the visual beauty. Preservation of these places has been insurmountable as urbanization continues to spread. These artistic interpretations are often records of places and the animals that inhabit them, showing what could be soon lost—or often, what already is. To aid in conservation has been the establishment of national parks and preserves around the world. These places are where animals seek refuge and where the lands are untouched. Nearly two centuries ago, 10 commissioners appointed by the Indiana general assembly were given a task of finding a suitable location for the new state’s capital. A year later a plat for what is now Indianapolis was approved, and not long after residents, merchants and government leaders began settling into the new town. Goods came by wagons from the east, as well as by keelboats and flatboats on the nearby White River. What was once the edge of the American frontier slowly faded into a thriving metropolis, one of the jewels of the Midwest. Last March, Heritage Auctions hosted its first standalone Art of the West sale, which had previously been a segment of its fine and decorative art sales. In this second iteration, the sale has grown in size to feature more than 250 paintings and sculptures with prices ranging from $500 to $50,000. The auction is made up of work from various private collections, with it concentrating primarily on the contemporary Western art offerings. It told the story of a weary cowboy looking out over the desert as he takes stock of his life and the adventures he experienced on horseback. Nicholas Coleman’s lifelong experience with hunting, fishing and trapping as well as growing up in an artistic household (his father is Michael Coleman) brings a high-level of reality to his paintings both in the skill of their execution and the scenes he depicts. In addition to his historically accurate paintings of Native American encampments, he paints the life of the hunters and fishermen whose campsites are often invaded by bears and their cubs. Uninvited Guests depicts the rummaging guests distracted by a noise in the distance. Although the bears bring danger into our lives, in their own environment they are often playful, an aspect that Dan Ostermiller portrays in his sculptures. Art and the Animal returns for its 59th annual show September 19 at the Briscoe Western Art Museum in San Antonio, Texas. This year’s juried show, organized by the Society of Animal Artists, will feature animal artwork by 135 of the world’s top wildlife artists, with as many as 100 artists traveling to the Briscoe for the opening weekend. Tennessee artist H. David Wright agonizes over the details because when it comes to history, the devil is in the details. “If you can shoot it or wear it, then we get as close as we can to how it may have looked. Each year, the Bosque Art Classic gives Western art collectors a playground with which to explore and purchase new art by some of the best artists working in the Western genre today. The juried exhibition and sale, now in its 34th year, will offer more than 230 original works from 136 artists from across the country. What began in 2007 as a group of artists gathering together to share their love of painting the Land of Enchantment has grown today into a full-fledged nonprofit arts organization with 146 members, including 15 signature members. Plein Air Painters of New Mexico (PAPNM) works to uphold the value of painting in plein air and immersing oneself directly with the landscapes in which they paint, providing regular opportunities for members to paint together during monthly “paintouts.” PAPNM also hosts annual juried and open exhibitions of members’ work, including the upcoming PAPNM 11th National Juried Members Show. When curators at the C.M. Russell Museum were finalizing their exhibition celebrating the centennial of one of Charles M. Russell’s most famous shows, they reached an agonizing impasse with the lineup of artworks: three paintings from Russell’s original show during the 1919 Calgary Stampede wouldn’t be in the exhibition. Two works, one owned privately and the other by a museum, could not be loaned. The third piece, Black Tail—Buffalo Days, had not been located. American history cheers every time Ken Burns makes a new film. The prolific documentarian has made films covering the West, baseball, the Civil War, jazz, the national park system, the Vietnam War, World War II, the Brooklyn Bridge and many others. For his newest film, Country Music, Burns turns his attention to the century-old music genre that was once called “hillbilly music” and is today a billion-dollar industry. Mike Ingram describes the first art he and his wife, Sheila, bought in 1972. “It was the Tim Cox calendar which I would cut out each year and have matted and framed. I still have some of them today.
