In 2014, after the acquisition of the Haub Family Collection, the Tacoma Art Museum in Washington expanded in order to properly display the one-of-a-kind collection of Western art. Less than five years later and the museum is expanding again, and once again it will expand to show off new works that are destined for the museum’s collection. On January 15 through 18, the Tacoma Art Museum will roll out the red carpet for museum patrons and guests as it opens the Rebecca and Jack Benaroya Wing, a 7,000-square-foot space that will offer a continuation of the primary design elements first developed in 2003 and further developed for the Haub Family Collection expansion in 2014. When Joni Falk was 8 or 9 years old, her aunt took her to the Art Institute of Chicago with a drawing group. She remembers them handing out paper and charcoal, and then encouraging the young students to copy some of the paintings. “They had an exhibit of [Edgar] Degas at the time, and they were just so beautiful,” Falk remembers. “That was my first sensitivity to art, right there in the museum in front of those great works.” That initial experience with paintings, compounded by the guiding hands of family members, set Falk on a path in art, one that she began professionally 50 years ago, and one that she still treks on today. In 1969, sketch artist Paul Calle drew three men as they ate breakfast and then got ready for work. These would have been ordinary and innocuous events had the three men not been Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins as they were preparing to board a rocket headed to the moon. Years later, after a rewarding career as an illustrator, Calle turned his attention to another kind of explorer: fur trappers and traders on the American frontier. The night skies of New Mexico have enthralled people for thousands of years. Sunset often marks the beginning of Pueblo ceremonies such as the Shalako Festival at Zuni. Dancers representing the couriers of the rain deities come to offer blessings for a new year and wear regalia that make them 9-feet tall. Gustave Baumann (1881-1971) learned printmaking in Germany and studied at the Art Institute of Chicago before settling permanently in Santa Fe, New Mexico, in 1919. His painting The Shalako, 1923, depicts in detail the ceremony that is no longer open to the public. The over 5-foot wide panel shows the Shalako towering over the other dancers and the people of the Pueblo. The best part about Brian Lebel’s shows is that they paint a whole picture of the West. Yes, there is art. But there’s also saloon bottles, poker chips, Native American blankets, saddles, chaps, rifles and revolvers, and every manner of Old West artifact. One year there were vintage spittoons. 2019 is shaping up to be an important year for the Cowboy Artists of America. Not only is the famous art group adding some additional art opportunities, for members and collectors, it is also making major changes to its annual sale. The CAA will move its annual exhibition and sale to the first weekend of November—November 1 and 2—and this year the exhibition will be held in Fort Worth, Texas, at the Amon G. Carter Jr. Exhibit Hall at the Will Rogers Memorial Center. Seven wildlife paintings by Wilhelm Kuhnert have traveled more than 5,000 miles to Frankfurt, Germany, where they will hang at the Schirn Kunsthalle for the exhibition King of the Animals, a retrospective on the famous German-born painter. The works are on loan from the National Museum of Wildlife Art in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. The exhibit is a comprehensive retrospective of the life and work of Kuhnert. “This is the first major retrospective of Kuhnert’s work in decades. The late 19th century was a great time for American landscape painting. Consider the names alone: Bierstadt, Church, Durand, Kensett, Bricher, Gifford and Moran. One name that does not come up very often, though certainly should, is Raymond Dabb Yelland, whose work is now being featured in an exhibition at the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento, California. Arizona residents, or even just the occasional Grand Canyon State visitor, will see plenty of recognizable details in John Mix Stanley’s 1855 landscape Chain of Spires Along the Gila River. The painting, part of the Phoenix Art Museum’s permanent collection, feels like a seek-and-find picture, a Where’s Waldo? of Arizona landmarks, plants and animals. Mule deer strut alongside flowing desert washes lined with century plants, yucca, Palo Verde trees and prickly pear cactus with ripe fruit dangling from their spiny limbs. In Francis Livingston’s new show, Expressions in Paint, the Idaho painter sets wonderfully realized and detailed figures against flat backgrounds rendered in an almost abstract style. Over the years California artist Dennis Ziemienski has done several “planes, train and automobile” shows that have been quite successful. For his next show, All Aboard! Trains in the Southwest, the painter turns his attention to one specific mode of transportation, the one that is most strongly linked to the American West. “The inspiration really comes from just growing up around trains, particularly in the 1950s and 1960s,” Ziemienski says. “At that time, especially in California, there were still steam and diesel trains that were moving around. Over the past 25 years, the Coors Western Art Exhibit & Sale has become one of the largest contemporary Western art exhibitions.
