On 27 May, the Allies attacked the German bridgehead at Abbeville. The 2e Division Légère de Cavalerie (2e DLC, a light ‘cavalry’ division equipped with Hotchkiss H35 tanks), with the British 2nd Armoured Brigade attached, moved towards the bridgehead along an axis to the east of the Blangy-Abbeville road, whilst the 5e DLC approached from the other side of the road. The attack was a disaster. A combination of poor Anglo-French cooperation, little infantry support, and insufficient reconnaissance led to the loss of large numbers of tanks and a failure to take the objectives.
