Of all the companies associated with Volkswagens, it’s Dormobile that has the earliest origins. This British conversion company forged a name for itself from the 1950s onwards, but its roots date back to 1773. That’s when its parent company, Martin Walter, was founded, making horse harnesses. This eventually led onto manufacturing carriages and coaches and, with the advent of the internal combustion engine, car bodies. It was responsible for some quite lavish creations on Rolls-Royce, Daimler, Vauxhall and Mercedes-Benz chassis. During the two world wars, it turned out military vehicles as well.
