Westfalia offered four basic versions of the Joker. This is a Joker 2 and is identified by the full-width rear seat. As the first VW show of the year Dub Freeze is always something we look forward to. After a winter of zero car action, it’s the chance to look at something other than what’s in your own garage, buy some parts and catch up with your buddies. Come the morning of the show (it’s always on a cold and miserable Sunday, hence the name) I always wonder why the heck I didn’t stay in bed. Until that is, I catch up with the first of many VWs heading towards the show ground and join the queue to the parking area. Once again, I had to park in the field over the road. VW Pick-Up trucks. Achingly cool, relatively rare and totally and utterly useless. Well, once you’ve really gone to town on one and restored it anyway. Don’t get us wrong, we think Crew Cabs, in either Bay or Split Screen form, are amongst the coolest air-cooled VWs ever built, but you can’t sleep in them, you can’t carry anything in the back without a cover, unless you’re happy to run the risk of whatever you’re carrying getting wet, or worse still, stolen, and that’s before you’ve restored the load bed and made it all nice and shiny. When this Split Screen Panel Van left the Hanover factory back in 1965 it was just your common-or-garden regular delivery vehicle. Okay, that’s not entirely fair because every Split Screen Bus is special in its own way and this particular one was ordered with two sets of rear cargo doors, making it a Double-door Panel Van, which added to its versatility back in the day, and adds somewhat to its kerb appeal in 2018. Just because paint has patina, doesn’t mean it can’t hold a shine. Whether you have an original paint Bus, a neglected repaint, a new paint job with some orange peel, or even paint that looks like it was applied with a stick, this feature applies to you. Here are a few tips to get your paint looking its best. It’s easy to look at a car with neglected paint and think it needs a respray, yet, these days, the patina look is all the rage. 1990 Type 25 Syncro, Graham Taylor Graham Taylor acquired his Syncro in Bratislava, Slovakia, after spotting it for sale on German eBay. It came with a good history, originating in Germany, then it went to Poland and has been up to the Arctic Circle as far as Russia, on an expedition with its previous owner, clocking up a huge mileage in the process. Graham bought the Syncro for a decent enough price, though unfortunately the fourth gear kept popping out, which it continued to do, while driving all the way back to his home in Ayrshire on the West coast of Scotland. Where do all those cool old VWs disappear to? You might spot the odd one or two at a VW show, but by and large, they tend to vanish off the face of the earth. When my girlfriend said she didn’t want to spend the summer with me and wanted to swan off to India to do some volunteering I pretended to be disappointed. Deep down I was over the moon; a good friend of mine had expressed an interest on joining me on my next road trip after seeing my Facebook photos of my escapades through Germany, Italy, Luxembourg and Lichtenstein over Easter. It’s extraordinary how much VW achieved in such a short space of time following the Second World War. In 1945, it was considered worthless; its one factory practically bombed out of existence, its sole product - the Beetle - dismissed as an unrefined, unattractive anachronism and the British army running piecemeal production. It didn’t look like something with a rosy future. Very few people would have bet money on it surviving, let alone succeeding.
