’71 Bay Window, Greg and Chloe Tebbutt Why this Bus? After enjoying a holiday in Cornwall and seeing other enthusiasts having so much fun with their Campervans, we started searching for a Split Screen Camper. However, our daughter, Chloe, reckoned there was no point buying a Split that would then spend 5-10 years in the garage undergoing any amount of restorative work, so why not go for a Bay Window instead that was almost ready to go. There are two ways to approach a solid import Bus. The first way, for the ones of us on a keener budget, is to park it outside your house and make it UK road legal. It had been four years since we had taken ‘Gertrude’, our 1970cc automatic Late Bay to France. The first time had been in 2010, the year we bought her, when we did a trip to Millau, across to Ardèche and then on to Annecy via St Hilaire le Touvet. On that trip Gertrude struggled with the hills – both climbing and stopping on the way down – as, despite reassurances from the company we bought her from, we found the front brakes were shot. The Slough Swapmeet is the last VW get together of the year and, for many, the last chance to find a part for a VW project before the winter show break. The story of Andrew Jobson’s Autohomes Kamper II begins at the start of 1985 when its first owner paid a visit to The Berkshire Motor Caravan Centre of Chieveley near Newbury in Berkshire. After deciding on the model and specification, an order was placed for a Kamper MkII in LH1B Bamboo Yellow with the optional 1915cc, 78bhp, water-cooled petrol engine at an additional cost of £252 over the £10,995 base price. The Kamper was registered at the local vehicle licensing office in Reading on March 1 and delivered shortly afterwards. It doesn’t take an automotive engineer to detect a worn steering box, faded brakes and a distinct lack of oomph from a four-cylinder combustion engine. Sus Guthrie, owner of this tip-top tin top ’65 Split Screen Camper does not confess to be an engineer of any variety. Now don’t get me wrong, I’ve nothing against fully restored VWs, because I believe you need the extremes and, in the VW world, you could say that takes the form of Rat Look and concours.
