It is believed that he kept it up until around 1993 and then sold it to a carpenter, who owned it for a very short period of time and then it passed into the hands of Stuart. “It was in good condition when I bought it and was fitted out with shelves in the back, being a working vehicle for the carpenter,” he remembers. “Over the years I’ve carried out some resto work, which has included the fitment of a pair of California import doors, a new tailgate and engine lid. To the uninitiated, we’re going on record to say that Type 25 Westys are without doubt some of the most comfortable, spacious and all-round best-equipped VW campers ever built. And, having owned a few old Golfs, but wanting to get into air-cooled VWs, Alex Behrendt was understandably drawn to the delights of just such a Camper. Our man saw this example advertised in Dunblane, Scotland and it tickled his fancy. Regular readers may remember that in March 2017, I decided to fund raise to get an old friend, Dennis, back behind the wheel of his beloved ’79 camper Ruby. Den has bad Emphysema and joint problems, which mean he can no longer operate the clutch pedal. I set up a Just Giving campaign and through social media and this magazine, managed to raise enough money for a full automatic conversion and Lite-steer power steering. The best part about the whole story, is that we managed to get Ruby completed and back to Den for a surprise reveal by early June, all under the premise that we were bringing her back to the UK for a new MoT, as she is stored out in France. When it comes to restoration, old VW campers are a bit like weddings. As soon as you mention the W or VW word to a specialist (paint, body or venue hire company) the price usually doubles, or triples as is often the case. Unlike weddings, this is not because everyone who deals in restoring old Buses is taking the p*ss because they know they can, it’s simply because restoring any old vehicle properly is a long and complicated affair. With an ominous sounding weather forecast, things were not shaping up to be especially great for the third Camper&Bus Show. However, Ledbury is a lovely part of the world, Eastnor Castle is a fabulous place to camp, and this is our very own shinning, so there was no way we were ever going to miss it, so we loaded up the Bus and headed for a weekend of camping at the castle. The Beaulieu Autojumble is older than God’s dog, and has always been on my to-do list, but I’ve never had the chance to attend, until now. I’d heard nothing but good things about this mammoth gathering, and being into old cars, motorcycles, and junk in general, I armed myself with a bunch of cash and headed along on the Saturday to see what all the fuss is about.
