Andrew Hollett, a toolmaker from Plympton near Plymouth has had a passion for VWs coursing through his family bloodline since before he was even born. His grandfather bought a ’47 Beetle back to this country after being stationed in German after the Second World War. Some years after this, Andrew’s family provided a home for a couple of Devon Bay Windows, and upon passing his driving test in 1989, Andrew embarked on his driving career with a 1960 Beetle. When it comes to Bus snobbery, owning a Wolfsburg-built Bus is just one small notch away from owning a Barndoor. What’s the difference between a Wolfsburg Bus and a regular Hanover-built one? On March 1 1955, Barndoor production came to an end; at this point, production of the Transporter was running alongside Beetle production in the Wolfsburg factory, but changes were afoot, and on the same day Barndoor production ended, the cornerstone was laid at a new Bus factory in Hanover. ’68 Road Runner, Mike and Silva Our Bus is a ’68 Road Runner Camper. I bought it with all the mechanical work already done. The Bus was a northern California resident most of its life and was built in January 1968 before being shipped to San Francisco. I think the person I bought it from got it from the original owner and did all the work. He builds amazing VWs and likes to keep that original, clean look. It’s got a 2275cc motor, built trans, disc brakes and had rust repairs under the front windshield, front mounted spare wheel, as well as powder coated gas tank, bumpers, suspension upgrades, and so much more. I’m as guilty of following the herd as any, but it’s because of this proliferation of patina, that Rachel and Dai Smith’s ’70 really caught our eye. That said, if patina was criminalized and you only saw shiny painted Buses at VW shows, this Microbus would still be a standout ride. The second I booked my tickets for the British Grand Prix, I knew I had to take my Camper. I arranged to meet some of my friends at Silverstone for the F1, so I had to pack the Bus up and get there on my own. As the weekend drew closer, I was determined not to leave the planning to the last minute; like I usually do and did an oil change, reset the tappets, checked the fuel lines, bled the brakes, checked the gear linkages, double checked the tyre pressures, checked the lights and made sure I was 100% happy with every aspect of the Bus.
