When does a job feel meaningful?” asks philosopher Alain de Botton in his treatise The Pleasures and Sorrows of Work. “Though we are often taught to think of ourselves as inherently selfish, the longing to act meaningfully in our work seems just as stubborn a part of our make-up as our appetite for status or money.” The question of meaning is one that Jeremy Bull, principal architect of Sydney studio Alexander &CO., has long been asking of his practice. “Given our relationship with the built environment, I am always curious how our work impacts both the private and public domain,” he explains. “In our work we are in a state of playful experimentation,” Bull goes on, while conceding that it’s “rarely best done on live projects, where the intrinsic risk…

In effort to contextualise a new Kennedy Nolan project in the north-east coastal basin of Sydney, designer Patrick Kennedy pulls up a bird’s-eye perspective of Mosman on Google Earth. It flattens the waterside suburb into a grid of grey streets abutting green reserves running into topaz-blue waters etched with the white wake of zooming boats. “A veritable Ken Done painting,” ventures Kennedy of the exuberant art made by the Mosman resident who has serially recorded the site’s vista with such saturated, seasonally nuanced liveliness that the sea spray can almost be felt and the grape-soda whiff of jacarandas smelt. The comparison deflects discussion to the genius of a prolific artist who is now being discovered by a new generation immune to the old critiques that condemned Done’s commercialism to cliché.…

It’s little wonder interior designer Yasmine Ghoniem compares her recently completed Plantasia project to the David Lynch aesthetic. The entire house is utterly filmic, with clashing prints set against plush fabrics, mismatched furniture and Wes Anderson precision with a squeeze of 1970s-interpreted Victoriana. It’s mesmerising without being overwhelming, and a far cry from the generic, mock-Colonial house it was before Ghoniem had her way with it. The house is set on the bucolic New South Wales South Coast. “It’s nestled in greenery and rolling hills, with beautiful citrus gardens,” says Ghoniem, founder of VL50-listed, Sydney-based interior design and architecture firm YSG. “It’s in an amazing location, but the interior didn’t marry with the incredible views on offer. Leticia Francini’s renovated townhouse on Manhattan’s Upper East has all the cinematic hallmarks of the little house surrounded by towering skyscrapers in the movie Up. Tucked between a barber shop and café, the late 1800s brownstone hardly seems real with its dollhouse proportions, but inside, its wonderland transformation is unexpected and bold. “We love that although it is a small house, it feels so large,” says Francini, who divides her time with her husband between Brisbane and Florence, and now New York. Mardi Doherty and her husband Trent Schmidt always imagined themselves in a mid-century home, maybe in Melbourne’s Caulfield, or Elsternwick. They have “a real love” for architecture of that vintage, she says; had spent years looking for the right one. Not too long ago she’d have told you she certainly “wasn’t interested” in buying a Federation — for one thing, bricks aren’t her favourite. But dreams look different in the daylight, and when the interior designer walked in the front door of this red brick Federation in Prahran, she turned to her husband and said, “Trent, this is our house. There are few Australians who haven’t heard the story of Jørn Utzon’s departure from the Sydney Opera House’s construction in 1966, and his subsequent replacement by 34-year-old Australian architect Peter Hall. Even in its most vague outlines — the tale of a scorned Dane fleeing Sydney and a promising young talent embarking on the herculean task of realising Utzon’s vision — is a rather remarkable one. While Utzon’s work is indelibly woven into the narrative of the Sydney Opera House, for Hall it was not to be his sole contribution to Antipodean architecture. In 1974, one year after the Opera House’s royal opening, Hall had progressed from the bureaucracies of the New South Wales government to a new project — the modernist family home of the state’s Supreme Court judge…

Temple House in Melbourne’s Hawthorn was always going to be an ambitious residential project, given it spans almost 400 square metres over one level. There are double-height ceilings overlooking vast collections of fine art, expansive glazing that juts up against mottled, travertine floors and humungous Verde Alpi kitchen islands masquerading as marble plinths. But somehow, in a space that could have felt like walking through a museum after hours, a collective of teams has come together to make it befit the young family who now calls it home. Patrick Kennedy and Rachel Nolan are taking us back to 1964, when The Beatles waved to hysterical fans from the balcony of Melbourne’s Southern Cross Hotel. A bastion for celebrity jetsetters, the hotel regularly hosted the city’s most glamorous events, and although it was demolished at the turn of the millennium, it lives on as a “touch point” for the making of Melbourne Place, another landmark just one block away. When Kennedy and Nolan’s architecture practice was tapped to author a new hotel on Russell Street at the Paris end of the CBD, they were adamant that it be a hotel for Melbourne, by Melburnians. “The city is full of chain hotels,” Kennedy laments, “and though they try to tailor them, they’re global in their DNA.” This time, the architecture…

To snorkel in the Great Barrier Reef is to feel quite keenly the idea that nature has always been the superior designer. So too what Anna Marsden, managing director of the Great Barrier Reef Foundation, calls our “beautiful insignificance”. Practically everybody, she says, is moved when they see it for themselves. And how could you not be when you see vivid purple orbs and jelly-like strands of coral that appear to be breathing, the triumphant stripes of flitting fish, or the magisterial presence of a stingray?
