Around 10 years ago, Angelica Arnott was living the Australian dream. Stationed in a house overlooking Wategos Beach — the picturesque playground populated by millionaire celebrities and surfers alike — Arnott had moved with her husband Charlie and four children from Sydney to Byron Bay. In many ways this Sydney apartment isn’t typically modern. Aesthetically, it’s busy, shiny and animated with tassels and golden couches. There are 19th century moire fabric dining chairs and moments redolent of the 1990s — wrought iron mirrors, glass sconces and chandeliers with deep blue spheres hanging aloft. But interior designer Tamsin Johnson isn’t known for her clean white walls, Scandi minimalism or taking the conventional route. This is a home with texture, with moxie, a place that’s lush and rich. In late 2023, the creative duo launched Studio Gardner — a chic showroom in Sydney’s Rushcutters Bay offering vintage furniture, art and design pieces in one exquisitely curated retail space. Well, colour me incredulous! Thus begins the banter with designer David Flack who opens the door to a staid Melbourne terrace sold some years earlier with the agent’s persuasion of ‘architect-renovated’ and pictures of all-white rooms about as enticing as tax time. The online proof of the preceding scheme — a clinical excision of the ornament, order and detail that dates the architecture circa 1870s — makes his studio’s reimagining of the row house all the more sizeable and stupefying. “It certainly needed a good Flacking,” says the Melbourne designer whose suspicion of ‘wipe-it-clean’ rationalism makes him serially reach for complexity and contradiction in layers of meaning that don’t salute a single style but stay respectful to the soul of the existing structure. It’s not every day you find an historic well in your home, and even less often that the well becomes the heart of it. But Argyle Well is an altogether different sort of house, and it’s paving the way for a new approach to Australian design; one that honours both sides of the battered old coin that comprises Australia’s contentious colonial history. “One of the things we were trying to do with this building was make sure we respected the Aboriginal Country in which it sits,” says architect Chris Major of Welsh + Major. “Millers Point in Sydney, where the house is, was originally called Coodye by the local [Gadigal] people.
