Establishing a business presents its own unique set of challenges. But talk to life-and-work partners Maxine Fielding and Olly Adam — who traded their London life for Sydney in 2019 — and it’s fair to say their circumstances were exceptional in setting up The Green Room. “When we arrived, the country was on fire,” says Fielding. “And then after that, it flooded and then we did our pop-up and had our Kelly Wearstler exhibition, and there was a government announcement to close on our opening day. The brief was simple. “Bring views of the water and light into the house,” explains architect and interior designer Blainey North. And so it was that Deauville, a six-bedroom, eight-bathroom house spreading some 900 square metres across three floors, came to be. Situated in Sydney’s glossy eastern suburb of Point Piper, next door to former prime minister Malcolm Turnbull no less, the 1950s building was originally constructed in a Mediterranean style but has had a mammoth overhaul by North and her team over four years. “We were inspired by Andrea Palladio’s Villa La Rotonda, built in the 1500s in the Renaissance style,” she says, noting it was the building she most loved when studying architecture — she even took a pilgrimage to Italy to see it — so Deauville holds…

Australians may think of their national colours as green and gold, but truthfully, the hues we actually live among are closer to sage and bronze. Vivid sunshine slants between eucalyptus trees give our landscape a burnished, earthy quality — it’s ancient, evocative and incredibly unique. Over the course of his career, Henry Wilson’s name has become linked to any number of impressive things: Aesop store interiors, his trademark lighting sconces in Calacatta marble and travertine stone, brass oil burners and the A-joint, an innovation that he originally conceived to support the top of a table while securing its legs. But nothing could’ve prepared the Sydney-based industrial designer for the dynamic of his most monumental project to date: building his very own home. “Being my own client was difficult in ways I hadn’t fully conceived,” says Wilson. “Finding clarity in my mind was the hardest thing.
