In July, I dined with Collette Dinnigan and photographer Felix Forest at the beautiful Masseria Trapanà in Puglia. They had just finished shooting at the beginning of an exciting but ambitious project to create this special issue of Vogue Living. I had invited Collette to guest-edit the magazine and capture the Italy she had experienced while living in Rome the year before, through the beautiful interiors of the homes of her friends, and her and husband Bradley Cocks’s in-depth, in-the-know knowledge of travel. In contemplating the life and work of enigmatic Italian designer Gabriella Crespi, one cannot help but think, at least momentarily, of Greta Garbo. One of the most beguiling actresses ever to grace the silver screen, the Swedish-born Garbo possessed an inimitable style that won her an international, cult-like following throughout the 1920s and ’30s. Tim Olsen is a leading gallerist in Australia, running Olsen Gallery, Olsen Annexe and Limited in Sydney’s Woollahra. Born into the arts dynastically, he is the son of the great painter John Olsen. It’s hard to believe only eight years ago there was nothing but grazing sheep where Amanda Sposito’s elegant-lined, modern take on the Tuscan farmhouse now stands, deep in the Capalbio hills, an hour and a half ’s drive north of Rome. “Here there was nothing,” says the former fashion photographer in her husky, heavily Italian-accented English. “No trees except a small clutch of oak trees. Vogue Living is such an iconic brand. It resonates with people all over the world, and as Australians we should be very proud. It was an honour to be invited to guest edit this issue and to create original work with Felix Forest, who photographed all the beautiful images you’ll see throughout these pages. I chose Italy as the theme because I recently spent a year living there with my family — Bradley Cocks, my husband, my daughter, Estella, and my son, Hunter — and it all still seems very fresh. Alicia Taylor had an idea as she was driving through Tasmania on a shoot four years ago. “I jumped out of the car and saw this storm. It was absolutely beautiful,” she says. She got her camera out, but wasn’t wholly satisfied with her depiction. “I felt it was too simple so I didn’t do anything with it, but I kept the image in my mind.” Quietly, over the next few years, the Australian travel and lifestyle photographer began to amass a collection of storm photographs, taken by her own hand. In Fiji, she found herself photographing a person swimming, and it was at this point that a more solid concept took hold. “I just chose, for some reason, to merge these two images [the storm and the water] together,”…

To the thousands of tourists who pass by it every day, Palazzo Orsini in the central Rome district of Parione is a real curiosity, impossibly perched on the 2000-year-old ruins of a mini-Colosseum. What other country has the history, the food, the wine, the geography, the abundance of differences in everything from north to south? Italy is the country of the moment. Everyone’s going there. It’s about the food, the language, the balance of work, life and family. We spent eight months in Rome and two months travelling across the country. Collette’s history is in Paris and France and we wanted to try living somewhere completely different that was neutral ground for both of us. We’ve always loved Italy. We love Positano. We were married there by the mayor, in Italian, on a terrace overlooking the ocean and I think our choice of place for a year away was deeply rooted in that.
