L ike many Australians, Linda Gregoriou has a diverse background: her father is Greek-Cypriot and her Celtic- Anglo mother hails from an old pastoral family in Western Australia. In 2015, she decided to explore her maternal family’s heritage. While on an architectural tour of the National Trust and Estate listed buildings from her family’s past, Gregoriou found that some had fallen into disrepair. This discovery led her to call Tom Perrigo, the CEO of National Trusts of Australia. As a result of that conversation, Gregoriou has become the driving force behind a joint retail venture launched in March called The Store. “We chose the name because each National Trust property generally had a store where dry goods were kept,” she says. L ast summer, French furniture dealer Armel Soyer invited the Moscow-based designer Denis Milovanov to her home in the Alps for a three-week artist’s residence. She had five huge blocks of Burgundy oak delivered, the largest of which measured 3.5 metres long x 80 centimetres in diameter. The Russian arrived with two chainsaws, a red pencil and a mighty 120-kilo Georgian whose job was to displace the wood. From it, Milovanov crafted a sculptural table, two benches and a chair, which sat for several months on the terrace until a nearby client acquired the table. It was so heavy it had to be transported by helicopter. Soyer is one of France’s most astute and compelling purveyors of contemporary design. No two Milan Design Weeks are the same. Sometimes you can remember them by the weather — the warm one, the wet one, the windy one, the one when the Icelandic volcano erupted and stopped Europe in its tracks — but more often than not it’s one or two defining images that linger in the memory. I haven’t yet decided if this year’s Salone del Mobile will be that of Ben Gorham and Luca Nichetto’s emotive Murano glass installation for Salviati; of Airbnb’s whimsical Passeggiata; of Dimore Studio or Studiopepe; or the year that Australian design in Milan finally came of age. A Brutalist concrete jungle. An industrial anathema to la dolce vita. A city often sniffed at by tourists and even by some Italians. Welcome to Milan, or at least the Milan you thought you knew. W hen interior designer Sarah Davison first laid eyes on the coastal home that would become her next project, she was somewhat taken aback. “It was painted a cheesecake yellow,” she remembers, “and there was a remedial-looking ramp running up to the top level. Inside it had a shiny, semi-circular pink granite staircase that didn’t line up with the front door, and some really horrible finishes.” It was an ugly duckling in a spectacular waterside setting overlooking a marine sanctuary on Sydney’s Northern beaches — surrounded by breathtaking ocean views — and it was just oozing with potential. “ You are only as good as the sum of your parts ” A ny dissection of Mardi Doherty’s design necessitates a good read through her résumé. It’s varied and very impressive, and it runs the gamut from site-specific luxury installations in London to hardcore institutional architecture in Melbourne. And it diarises the evolution of an elegantly restrained hand. In short order, Doherty graduated from Interior Design at Melbourne’s RMIT in 1994, commenced a degree in architecture, dropped out to become an artist and detoured back into design (learning to detail “drama” in the office of Chris Connell) before decamping to London. No detail is left unturned by Lionel Jadot’s watchful and playful eye. When the Belgian designer took on this project, a narrow four-storey townhouse in London’s Knightsbridge, he started with a synopsis. “I wanted to create the feeling not of being in the heart of a busy city but of being on holiday — even if it’s just travelling with your eyes from the sofa,” Jadot says. “If you take the time to sit and look, there are surprises everywhere.
