Kelly Wearstler may have grown up a design-obsessed kid scouring flea markets in her native South Carolina before moving north to Boston to follow her passion at university, but our guest editor’s style ethos lays firmly in her adopted home. “California totally informs my work because it’s not rooted in tradition, so there’s always new and emerging artists — whether it’s film or architecture or design,” says Wearstler, kicking back in the living room of her Beverly Hills home. “The design styles are so vast in California and there are no rules. You can do what you want here in a way I don’t think people do on the east coast [of the US]. John McIlwee and his husband, Bill Damaschke, would never have dreamed of buying a weekend house in Rancho Mirage when they first visited the quiet California desert city in 2010. “I just thought it would be too stuffy and straight,” says McIlwee. “It was too far east, and all of our friends were in Palm Springs. “In my house, you wash the dishes to the view, you cook to the view, you sleep to the view” mark Haddawy — co-founder of Los Angeles-based vintage clothing institution Resurrection, restorer of homes, and collector of art, antiques and furniture — says that with his various passions, he’s clearly an obsessive. One of these great passions is Harpel House — a mid-century, geometric marvel set high in the Hollywood Hills overlooking the majestic San Gabriel Mountains and the sprawling San Fernando Valley. Legendary American architect John Lautner (see page 48) designed the home in 1956, and Haddawy bought it in 2005. “IT HAD TO BE CITY-SPECIFIC AND TO FEEL VERY LOCAL” — KELLY WEARSTLER When Kelly Wearstler began to map out the interior design of San Francisco’s Proper Hotel, she conjured up an extensive backstory. “You’re in this woman’s home and it’s like a series of living rooms,” the designer begins. “This woman lives there with a black cat called Charmaine, who hangs out on the rooftop, and you’re just waiting in her salon for her.” For inspiration, Wearstler looked not only to the city’s own melting pot of architecture and design but further afield to France. “San Francisco is a very classic city,” she says. “You see hints of 1940s Cubist design, while this building is very much a Beaux Arts-style. “The brief for these four bathrooms was ‘textural, bold, optimistic and layered’. We were approached by a busy professional couple for the project, which also encompassed a wine cellar, two bedrooms and external works. They wanted each bathroom to have its own distinct aesthetic. It was a wonderful opportunity and it was such fun giving each space a unique personality. The owners were very adventurous in terms of their choices of finishes and colours. The main bathroom — which is her bathroom — is in shades of dusty pink, the master ensuite is a deep aubergine, the guest ensuite is blush pink and the powder room is in tones of blue-grey. In LA, you have everything from the mountains to the beach and the city. It’s an incredible combination. I moved to LA because of the weather and the beach. I grew up in South Carolina and the weather in LA is very similar. Being near the ocean is really important to me. HAVING A BEAUTIFUL ROOM in which to sit back and enjoy a topnotch meal is one thing, but a truly successful space will feel as comfortable as it is fabulous. A major hurdle to this is often its size — in restaurants, bigger is rarely better. That’s why Barangaroo House is so special. With three standalone venues seating a total of 850 at any one time, it’s positively enormous. But it works. “The apartment was completely original 1970s including silver foil wallpaper on the bathroom ceilings. Our brief was to reconfigure the spaces for a more modern approach to living. The clients were a couple retiring to the harbour side, which was a change of location and lifestyle for them. We opened up the kitchen to the harbour views and stripped the apartment back to the structure. Then we layered up a new interior with rich materiality and detailing. The spaces work well functionally, with oodles of storage, but it’s the beautiful bespoke details, such as the solid brass kitchen handles, that really stand out. Asked to describe her own design style, the first word Lana Gomez comes up with is “unexpected”, quickly followed by “colourful and whimsical, playful but sophisticated, artistic”. The story starts with a rubbish bin. In 1939, metalworker Holger Nielsen created a steel pedal bin for a hairdressing salon in Randers, Denmark, run by his wife, Marie. It had to be tall, operate hands-free, have handles at the side for easy moving and be sturdy. Such was the local interest in his project that Nielsen bought a lathe and started a metal-turning business to produce his bin. He named it Vipp, a nod to the sound of the lid as it opened. Following his death in 1993, his daughter, Jette Egelund, took the company’s reins and, as the industrial look started to gain traction in homes, began wooing design stores.
