P arting the split white curtain that veils the entrance to Tokyo dining institution Yakumo Saryo feels like entering a shrine. This may sound an exaggeration but ceremonial quietness and serenity surrounds this establishment in the city’s south, which is housed in a rebuilt 30-year-old residence situated behind a stone wall on 800 square metres of land. Unlike the flashy dining quarters of Aoyama or Ginza in central Tokyo, Yakumo Saryo — Saryo means ‘restaurant with a room for Japanese tea’ — seems right at home in this quiet residential district, 15 minutes walk from the nearest railway station. ANNA VARENDORFF /sculpture If you hang your umbrella on one of Anna Varendorff ’s ethereal brass sculptures, she won’t be offended. “It happens all the time,” the artist says with a rueful laugh. “I called this collection Objects of Free Use, so I invited it!” Varendorff has always encouraged tactile engagement with her work: at ACCA’s New 16 exhibition in Melbourne in 2016, her large-scale geometric brass-and-wood forms resonated in various pitches when you touched them. OSAKA-BORN YASUMICHI MORITA didn’t train as an interior designer. He admits that what set him on his career path was a desire to afford the same clothing brands as his friends in label-obsessed late-1980s Japan. He needed a job. Starting as a window-dresser, Morita cut his interiors teeth on a bar named Cool in 1987. His design practice, Glamorous, now employs 50 people and has created award-winning projects throughout Japan and in London, New York, Paris and Hong Kong. “Whether the design is for a restaurant or club, I try to reach deep inside the human psyche… to create something that speaks to desire,” he says. “My job is to guide my audience and to satisfy their needs and wants.” Morita-san, you published a monograph in 2013 titled Glamorous Philosophy…

Romi Weinberg doesn’t have to travel far to get into the holiday spirit; she has her own little piece of the Mediterranean right at home in Sydney. Sheltered from view at the end of a long driveway in Bellevue Hill, the house itself is like a hidden oasis. “I thought it was so special because it’s tucked away,” she says. “Most people don’t even know it exists.” Initially drawn to the secluded location, Weinberg just needed to change the style of the house to better suit her life with her two daughters, Bo, nine, and Tatum, four. Pierre Pirajean and Héléna Paraboschi live in France, but spend at least one week a month in Morocco — the couple own the restaurants Le Grand Café de la Poste and Bô-Zin, both in Marrakech. “As a callow twentysomething publicist I once lunched with Japanese fashion icon Rei Kawakubo. Dressed in her signature black and reserved to the point of shyness, she spoke quietly and economically through an interpreter. It was the 1980s and the fluid asymmetry of Kawakubo’s influential Comme des Garçons label represented the antithesis of the decade’s power dressing and hedonistic excess. The Japanese have an acute sense of attention to detail, respect for others and sincere appreciation for craftsmanship and good design. There is also a deep historical aspect to the culture, which is rich in philosophy heavily influenced by both Chinese and Indian schools of thought such as Zen, and religions such as Shinto, Buddhism and Confucianism. They y take it as a piece of emotion” f or the past seven years, Paris-based designer India Mahdavi has been returning to her native Tehran, Iran, on a regular basis. During her time there, she has not only been struck by the conviviality of the locals and the city’s chaotic nature — “It’s huge, and the traffic is terrible” — she has also found parallels with her own aesthetic. “I’ve always said, ‘I’m the Queen of Mix and Match’,” says Mahdavi. “That’s something that’s all over the place in Iran. I n the tectonic feast that is modern Tokyo, the architecture of Kengo Kuma is akin to sushi. It is quintessentially Japanese, draws on centuries of tradition, appeals to global tastes, combines fresh ingredients in compact form and leaves you hungry for more. “[It] is a good metaphor for my architecture,” said Kuma in a 2008 interview with the UK’s Architects’ Journal. “If the journey of the ingredients is too long, the taste of the sushi is compromised. The owner of this apartment in the heart of Lyon firmly believes in being decisive. “I’m an Aries,” declares the lively entrepreneur. “I need things to be clearly determined.” And when it comes to renovating homes, she makes up her mind about absolutely everything from the word go — the layout, the paint colours, the furniture. The result is greater efficiency. “Most things were in place just 24 hours after the building work was complete,” she says. “About the only thing missing was a rug that arrived three days late.” It didn’t take her long to decide to buy the apartment, either. noto in the south east of Sicily is a bewitching place, with late Baroque buildings made of a pale-golden local stone that glows in the sun. Considered a triumph of 18th-century town planning, the UNESCO-listed town is revered for its architectural harmony and theatrical perspectives. But when industrial designer Gordon Guillaumier first saw Sicily’s ‘golden city’ in 1991, it was in a sorry state. The streets were deserted and buildings were propped up with scaffolding to save them from toppling after an earthquake the year before that measured 5.1 on the Richter scale. “It was quite spooky but so transporting, it felt like being in a theatre set,” says Guillaumier. “I fell in love immediately.” A student at the time, in Milan on his way home to Malta, Guillaumier dreamed…
