Lara Merrett This Sydney-based visual artist, who embellished the edges of Vogue Living’s front cover and logo, says she is inspired by “the extraordinary, light, scale, other art practices and ideas on what makes a painting”. Merrett uses large-scale industrial cloth, often starting on the ground. “I work up many coloured layers through the use of water, which is poured and then evaporates,” she explains. “These sheets become the backbone of the painting. Interior designer George Freedman, who died on 21 July at the age of 80, was a modern-day alchemist. “He was a master of whipping up a dessert out of nothing or mixing a cocktail — it could be a metaphor for his work,” says architect Sam Marshall, who worked for Freedman in the 1980s. “This ability to manipulate material, space, colour, texture, form and lighting set him apart. He was a magician of atmosphere.” Born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1936, Freedman studied architecture at Syracuse University. In the early 1960s, he worked as an interior designer in New York before moving to London in 1965. Three years later, he returned to the US and joined Knoll’s international planning unit. In the Spring of 1950, having just wrapped the film adaptation of his novel Les Enfants Terribles, Jean Cocteau went to spend a week in a handsome, turreted villa in Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat on the French Riviera. Known then as the Villa Santo Sospir, by the time Cocteau left 11 years later it had become infamous as ‘la villa tatouée’ — the tattooed villa — thanks to the dandy painter’s deft hand with charcoal and brush. At the time, the house was the summer residence of Françine Weisweiller, a Parisian socialite and patron of Yves Saint Laurent. Pemberton, British Columbia, is a small town just north of the Whistler ski slopes in western Canada. From the first entreaty to photograph the Hunter Valley home of Australian artist Dale Frank to his final accord to let Vogue Living record it, more than a year has elapsed, which is hardly surprising given Frank’s withering indifference to social propriety and the press. The interior architecture of artist Robert Kelly’s Manhattan apartment, with its imposing original 1860s iron pillars and exposed beams, provides the perfect backdrop for Kelly’s sought-after paintings. The apartment covers more than 400 square metres over two flfloors in a historic building originally used as a community house for immigrant Germans living on the Lower East Side. Just offff from the Bowery, it’s an area that hasn’t yet been gentrifified to the extent of Kelly’s old neighbourhood, Tribeca. Cirrus is a seafood restaurant for the here and now -CHEF AND CO-OWNER BRENT SAVAGE Visitors to Cirrus, a sleek new Sydney restaurant in the emerging waterside precinct of Barangaroo, may be slightly discombobulated on arrival. Suspended from the ceiling is a 1950s ski boat with a timber finish, black leather interior and white steering wheel. The elevated vessel, called Alvin — which recalls a speedboat from an Elvis Presley movie of the time — is a sly joke played by architect and designer Pascale Gomes-McNabb. When imagining this contemporary seafood restaurant, she dismissed hackneyed marine motifs such as anchors, aquariums and fish prints.
