The original charm of this 1920s holiday house in Sydney’s Palm Beach was begging to be discovered when interior designer Siobhan Rothwell was brought on board. Having worked on many historic homes since setting up her practice seven years ago, this project was right up her alley. “The house was under-utilised and the client saw the potential of the original layout and decided to give it a makeover so they could maximise on this without doing too much work,” she says. Ten emerging Australian designers took part in a discussion with Vogue Living — in conjunction with Lexus Next, a platform that supports the future of design — on what it means to be a designer in Australia today. Hosted by VL’s editor-in-chief Neale Whitaker, creative director Jack Milenkovic and Melbourne editor Annemarie Kiely, the event was held at the Dolphin Hotel in Sydney’s Surry Hills, amid a new interior designed by George Livissianis. For artist Craig Waddell, painting takes him into a transcendent space. When Melbourne design duo Jane Sinclair and Steve Cornwell sold their graphic studio, Cornwell, and made plans to relocate to New York two-and-a-half years ago, they discovered early on the frustrations inherent to the city’s real estate. “I initially looked at 15 apartments, and I was getting really depressed about how tiny, dark and claustrophic everything felt,” says Cornwell. And of course, coming from Australia, the couple and their two teenage sons were keen to have a sense of space. Things were looking pretty grim until their agent mentioned a loft on SoHo’s Wooster Street. “He said, ‘It’s in pretty bad condition, it’s an artist’s loft, it hasn’t got a street view, it’s in the middle of a bunch of buildings,’” says Cornwell, now creative director at the Howard Hughes…

Golden-age Amsterdam rendered merchants as rich as royalty and their 17th-century canalside ‘palaces’ are still the stuff of dreams for many Amsterdammers — and the happy reality for designer Pieter Ary Bakker. Overlooking the Keizersgracht, which runs from Amsterdam’s famous fan-shaped Canal Ring, this particular city palace is a magnificent first-floor apartment formerly inhabited by the renowned Russian pianist Youri Egorov but originally built for Dutch merchant Cornelis Arentsz van Belleme in 1686. For the past 25 years it has been both a home and a major source of inspiration for Bakker. We’re living through troubled times and it would be naive to consider the world our playground as once we could. More than 30 years on, I can precisely recall the smell of diesel and wood smoke as our truck rattled through the Burmese night; taste the vanilla in my first butter-yellow New York corn muffin; hear the shrill ululations of a wedding celebration in a Cairo bazaar. THE HISTORY OF STRAW MARQUETRY reads like a tale of artisanal rags-to-riches. Wood marquetry’s poor cousin, the labour-intensive practice of flattening out straw to create inlays and veneers was a pastime deemed acceptable for cloistered nuns in 17th-century France as well as prisoners during the Napoleonic Wars, who used straw to decorate small boxes. Then, in the 1920s, furniture designers André Groult, Jean Royère and Jean-Michel Frank reinvigorated the art to dazzling effect, focusing on broad surface decorations such as folding screens, doors and cabinets (Frank’s apartment on rue de Verneuil was covered entirely in straw marquetry). Most recently there’s Lison de Caunes, Groult’s granddaughter, who rescued straw marquetry from the precipice of oblivion in the 1970s and now counts Jacques Grange and Peter Marino as clients — the latter…
