Talk about killer colours. The green that has crept into our wardrobes, or oozed like the similarly hued slime-craze, has a deadly past. Scheele’s green, named after its creator, is a shade closer to chartreuse than shamrock, and in Victorian times was de rigueur, colouring clothing, shoes, soap and silk faux flowers. It was also lethal. Those who dwelled in delicately accoutred rooms, where it lurked colouring the wallpaper, fell to mysterious sickness and untimely ends owing to its arsenic-laced pigment.
Thankfully, today’s iteration is less ruinous, more revitalising. Designers at Versace, Paco Rabanne, Balenciaga and Saks Potts are feeling the freshness. Lime and its varietals taking up runway space this season are the cooler sisters to prim sunshine-yellow lemon.
At its most lurid, it’s an off filter on spring…
