Around 3am this morning I was lying on my daughter’s bed proofreading pages. She had dragged her little mattress into our bedroom at around 11 the previous night. She was coughing badly, and I had to intervene before it became a full-blown croup attack. So I shifted the pages aside, hauled out the nebuliser, and consoled her, murmuring, “I’m actually working.” Later she chirped, “But mommy was just drawing. That’s mommy’s work, to draw like that.
