If I was going to describe TV in one word, I’d say “drama”. From action and reality, to soapies and sci-fis –every production needs a driving factor, it’s “central drama” that pushes the storylines forward. And this edition of tvplus is overflowing with drama – starting with new and returning shows. I love Killing Eve (p15) with the two strong female leads trying to outwit each other – and it’s finally on SABC3 now, along with season 3of drug-cartel series Narcos (p14). There’s a return for the Chicago franchise too as Chicago Fire (p19) and Chicago PD (18) tackle COVID-19 on top of their regular storylines. And how much fun has The Bachelorette SA been? We do get passionately attached to shows. Streaming allows us to follow series and binge to our hearts’ delight, and also fit our favourite shows in around all the live TV viewing that we do professionally. It allows us to sit back with a sweet, funny pick-me-up after reviewing intense dramas and thrillers on dark topics. And sometimes it just lets us switch off and enjoy for a moment when we’re neck-deep in season 4 of a twisty, detail-driven show with 40 different essential characters. Killing Eve Season 1 Thursdays (from 10 June) SABC3 (*193) 21:00 A successful romcom series needs a hair-raising yet humorous boy-meets-girl plotline where the couple are occasionally separated by complicated obstacles, such as careers or loved ones, along with adose of suspense and a pinch of seduction. Add drama, action and murder to the mix and you’ve got dry dramedy series Killing Eve (2018-now), but there’s a twist to the love arc – it features two women at its core.
