LIKE SO MANY of the great comedians, Teri Garr always let you know she was in on the joke. With a wry smile, a sigh, perhaps a giggle and a squint of her expressive eyes, this endearing actress enjoyed success on screens big and small and was Oscar-nominated for 1982’s Tootsie as a struggling actress outshined by her boyfriend (in drag!). Her sunny, self-deprecating personality made her a favorite for late-night hosts Johnny Carson and David Letterman, who recalled her as “a first-class actor and comedian and a lovely human being.” Garr passed away October 29 at age 79 from complications of multiple sclerosis, a diagnosis she made public in 2002.
