SOAP STARS ARE generally known for their long tenures, and Hayes, who died January 12 at 98, was no exception. The actor originated the role of convicted con artist turned lounge singer Doug Williams on Days of Our Lives in 1970 and then went on to portray him for the next 53 years, appearing in more than 2,000 episodes.
