MY ADOLESCENCE IN the 1970s coincided with TV’s coming of age. Along with the rest of America, I watched the medium grow up before my very eyes—in large part thanks to the genius of Norman Lear. His oh-so-human comedies brought the real world into our living rooms, whether we were ready or not. Lear, whose life and career spanned a century, died December 5 at the age of 101. He was there at TV’s infancy. After serving in World War II in the Army Air Forces, he wrote for Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis on The Colgate Comedy Hour and other 1950s comedy-variety shows, then turned to screenwriting, earning an Oscar nomination for 1967’s Divorce American Style. Most years it’s anyone’s guess who’ll walk away with Emmys when the same shows and stars so often get nominated. This year’s ceremony (January 15, 8/7c, on Fox), delayed four months by industry strikes, is no exception, but there are a few obvious front-runners.
